When nurses use evidence to support clinical judgment, it can be easy to forget where that evidence comes from.

Behind every validated nursing diagnosis, every refinement to nursing terminology, every improvement in clinical reasoning, and every new contribution to nursing knowledge is research.

And research requires support.

The International Nursing Knowledge Association (INKA) Foundation (formerly the NANDA Foundation) was created to help advance nursing science by supporting research focused on nursing diagnoses, clinical reasoning, nursing assessment, and the development of nursing knowledge. Its grants help nurse researchers explore important questions about human responses to health conditions, the effectiveness of nursing interventions, and the knowledge that supports nursing practice.

Many of these studies begin as small, practice-focused projects that might not receive funding through traditional research mechanisms. Yet these projects often contribute to the development, refinement, validation, and application of nursing knowledge used by nurses around the world.

Better clinical judgment requires better nursing knowledge.

Better nursing knowledge requires research.

And research requires people who believe that nursing science is worth investing in.

Error común en el concepto de diagnósticos medicos y diagnósticos de enfermería 🤔

A common misconception in nursing education is that medical diagnoses and nursing diagnoses describe the same thing. In reality, they serve different but complementary purposes within patient care.

A medical diagnosis identifies a disease or pathological condition.

For example:
• Heart Failure
• Pneumonia
• Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

These diagnoses help guide medical treatment and disease management.

A NANDA® nursing diagnosis focuses on how the patient is responding to that condition (and/or to a stage of life or life event) and what requires nursing care.

For a patient with Heart Failure, nursing diagnoses might include:
• Excessive fluid volume (00026)
• Decreased activity tolerance (00298)
• Risk for decreased cardiac output (00240)
• Ineffective health self-management (00276)

This distinction matters because a medical diagnosis alone doesn’t fully explain how a condition is affecting a specific person’s daily function, safety, comfort, coping, or care needs.

Two patients may share the same medical diagnosis while requiring very different nursing care. One patient with heart failure may primarily struggle with fluid overload and breathing difficulty, while another may experience fatigue, reduced mobility, anxiety, or difficulty managing self-care at home.

The medical diagnosis identifies the condition being treated, while the nursing diagnosis helps identify the patient’s unique responses and experiences that require nursing care and ongoing clinical judgment.

Rather than competing with one another, medical and nursing diagnoses contribute different kinds of clinical insight that together support a more complete understanding of the patient.
