Nearly 2 decades ago, DNA inside a pinkie finger bone found in a Siberian cave revealed the existence of what are now known as the Denisovans, an extinct close evolutionary cousin of Neanderthals and our own species.
But in the years since, only a skull and a few more teeth and bone fragments have been definitively linked to these mysterious humans, making it difficult to determine what the rest of their bodies looked like.
Now, researchers report that a pair of ancient leg bones, a femur and partial tibia, scooped up from the bottom of the Strait of Taiwan, may hold valuable clues.
