International Day of Natural Medicine
Today, on the International Day of Natural Medicine ⚕️🤲🏽, we celebrate the immense ancestral wisdom of Peru.

Three of its most profound expressions of traditional medicine have been declared National Cultural Heritage: the traditional cultural uses of the coca leaf 🍃, the traditional knowledge and uses of Ayahuasca 🌿, and the traditional knowledge, wisdom, and uses of the San Pedro cactus 🌵.

These declarations highlight the importance of these ancient legacies for health and identity, as an essential part of the cultural diversity that enriches us as a country. 🇵🇪

📘 : SABER or CONOCER?

In Spanish, we use “saber” and “conocer” for different things, even though both translate to “to know” in English. Here's a quick guide:

🔹 SABER = Information, facts, skills
✅ Examples:
– I know how to swim. (Sé nadar.)
– Do you know what time it is? (¿Sabes qué hora es?)
– She knows how to speak Spanish. (Ella sabe hablar español.)

🔹 CONOCER = People, places, things you're familiar with
✅ Examples:
– I know your sister. (Conozco a tu hermana.)
– Do you know Cusco? (¿Conoces Cusco?)
– I don't know that song. (No conozco esa canción.)

📌 Tip: If you can replace it with “to be familiar with,” use conocer!

: 🍃 "K’intu", an ancestral offering
In the Andes, coca leaves are not only chewed or used for infusions; they also carry deep symbolic and spiritual meaning. One of the most significant practices is the "k’intu", the offering of three carefully chosen coca leaves presented with respect to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (mountain spirits).

Each leaf represents an intention: gratitude, request, and connection. Through the act of "k’intuy" (blowing on or offering the leaves), a sacred bridge is formed between humans and nature 🌿.
This tradition is an essential part of many Andean ceremonies and continues to be practiced strongly in the communities of Cusco and the Sacred Valley 🏔️.

✨ A gesture of respect, faith, and harmony with the Andean worldview.

👉 Did you know about this tradition? Have you ever participated in a coca leaf offering?
