The Difficult Invention of Democracy in Peru: Ethnic and Power Issues

Two years after celebrating the 200th anniversary of its independence, Peru is going through one of the most difficult moments in its republican history. Indigenous peoples were hopeful that democracy would vindicate their rights, which have been suppressed since colonial times and barely recovered during the socialist military dictatorship of the 1970s. Instead, democracy in Peru today is used to delegitimize the rights of Indigenous peoples and hinder their access to power. This panel attempts to explain how ethnicity and democracy are used to limit the rights of Indigenous peoples and their political participation in the Peruvian state.

On this day in 1950, famed author George Orwell passed away. Just the year before his death, he published one of his most famous works – 1984 – a fictional story that took readers into a dystopian future of government control and surveillance.
Orwell, whose birth name was Eric Arthur Blair, was convinced from a young age that he would be a famous author. Much like his peers, Orwell considered Lenin one of the most significant men of his time, but his refusal to conform often led him to be deeply critical of imperialism and capitalism. Later in life, Orwell vehemently criticised communism, as evidenced in his book 'Animal Farm'.
Today, we take the opportunity to remember Orwell’s contributions to literature and for his critical eye on social norms. Just shy of 1984, UNESCO published two special issues in The Unesco Courier and the review 'The Impact of Science in Society', exploring the intersection of fiction and reality and focused on Orwell's work. How does today compare to Orwell’s predictions for the future?

Dear SIT Alumni, Friends, and Supporters,
I am an alumna of the Peru Indigenous People and Globalization program of 2018. The most incredible part of my experience in Peru was the generosity of my homestay families who opened up their homes to me, shared food and stories, and showed me love and compassion. Our programs would not exist without the generosity of these families.
When I was in the Amazon, my host family cared for me like a member of their own family. Right now they are experiencing the worst of the pandemic. They’ve reached out to us, asking for our help. Without access to medical care or running water, many indigenous communities, including their own, are at a structural disadvantage for protecting themselves against the virus. The nearest hospital has collapsed, they have received no help from the Peruvian government, and they have already lost two community members to Covid 19, with many others sick, including my host father and their two little girls. They need funds for medicine, food, and supplies.
Adde Sharp, a fellow SIT alumna, has created a go fund me to collect donations to send directly to their community. These funds will be distributed among families in the community so they can access the food and medicine they need to survive. This is where we need your help. We want to spread this message as far as we can, so we can raise enough money to make a difference. SIT has an incredible community of alumni and supporters who are global leaders and change makers.
