A big reason good companies fail has nothing to do with strategy, talent, or resources. It's bureaucracy disguised as 'process'.. let me explain 👇🏾

I was speaking to Dara Khosrowshahi the CEO of Uber about this on a recent podcast. He was adamant on one idea: anyone should be able to talk to anyone in the organisation.

No chain of command lag, no bureaucracy. Just the fastest path to getting the right thing done.

He's worked hard to build this into Uber since taking charge, and I think it's one of the most underrated things a leader can do...

Elon Musk said something similar in an internal memo at Tesla - that communication should always travel the shortest path to get the job done, never through the chain of command.

If someone on our team is working on something and the person who can unblock them sits three levels away in a different department - they should speak directly, instead of sending it up the chain, across, and back down again which takes 10x as long..

The idea of our org chart exists for accountability and structure, not a mandatory communication map..

This requires common sense and no fragile egos... which I often think of as the exact opposite of bureaucracy.

Processes matter in business... but I find myself every single week breaking some process or system that I might've created myself.. because in that specific scenario, following it would just add time, slow us down, and the delay wouldn't add any value.

I also encourage my team to be rule breakers who never allow process or bureaucracy to override their ability to make high common sense decisions when they believe it's the right thing to do.

We'll make mistakes sometimes. And that's fine.

If we make no mistakes in this regard, I'd be terrified about who we've become.

If you want to prioritise speed in your company a good question to ask is ... how many layers does a good idea have to travel before someone can act on it? 👊🏾
