Women in Japan (Nippon) 🇯🇵 learned martial arts in different eras, with records of female warriors (Onna-musha) before the samurai period and a heyday in the Middle Ages and the Edo period, where they defended homes and families. In the 16th century, there were also female ninjas (Kunoichi), and in the late 19th century. In the 19th century, with the general opening of Japan 🎌, a broader, although only later politically effective women's movement began, which also influenced traditional arts.
