Something to consider!

When demands exceed tolerance and reinforcement is too thin, you become aversive.

As you view these 5 levels think about your own engagement experiences. How are you relating these to yourself and students you teach?

Here are some conversation starters that can help increase student engagement:

Open-ended questions
These questions can have multiple correct answers and can encourage responses from students who might not know how to define a term or solve a formula.

Authentic questions
Asking questions that the teacher doesn't already know the answer to can help create an intellectually engaging classroom culture.

Relationship-building questions
These questions can help students feel valued and safe, and can foster connections with peers and adults.

Sentence stems
These can help students state their own solutions, add on to others' ideas, disagree, or ask for help.

What would the title of your autobiography be?
Besides graduating, what is your number one goal for your remaining time at school?
Who do you think is a great example of a successful person?
What do you most appreciate in life?
What do people never ask you that you wish they did?
What animal represents you in the present and why? (You can also ask in the past and future.)
