I volunteered over the weekend for Spay Panama's Animals USA-Panama and my heart is so full 🐾💚 Here I am with superhero Director & Founder of Spay Panamá, Patricia Chan. Over this weekend, the team worked tirelessly to sterilize thousands of animals—dogs and cats who might otherwise face lives of suffering, neglect, or abandonment. It’s intense, emotional work, but so incredibly meaningful. Spay Panamá provides free and low-cost spay/neuter clinics across the country, helping control the stray animal population humanely and compassionately. They also educate communities, promote responsible pet care, and quite literally save lives—both the animals treated and the ones who will never be born into hardship because of this work. 🐶🐱✨ I’m so grateful to have been part of something that makes such a real difference.

At Cascada Nativa 💧🌿 ⛰️ Up in the mountains of Panamá, where the air turns cool, and the rainforest stacks itself in endless shades of green. After the heat of the beach where I live, the mountain air feels like a full-body exhale. Water running clear over stone, mist drifting through the hills, and flashes of unmistakable electric blue — yes, blue morphos — moving through the canopy like living pieces of sky. These wild corners of Chame are something special. Panamá always delivers. 🇵🇦

The Emberá are one of Panamá’s Indigenous peoples, traditionally river-based forest communities whose lives are closely tied to the water and the rainforest. Here, Mom & I are in a hand-carved canoe on the Chagres River, traveling the way the Emberá have for generations, guided by an Emberá man whose knowledge of the river comes from ancestral memory as much as from lived experience. The Emberá originally came from the Darién region of eastern Panamá and the neighboring lowlands of Colombia, where they lived along rivers like the Tuira and Chucunaque before some communities gradually moved west into areas such as the Chagres River basin.
Panamá is also home to several other Indigenous nations, each with its own distinct culture and territory. The Guna live primarily in Guna Yala and are known for their molas and strong political autonomy. The Ngäbe and Buglé inhabit the western highlands and form the country’s largest Indigenous population. The Wounaan, closely related to the Emberá, share similar forest and river traditions, while the Naso (Teribe) live along the Río Teribe near the Costa Rican border and maintain a unique monarchic system. Smaller groups such as the Bribri also live in the western border regions, adding to the rich human-made living diversity of Panamá.
Mom & I spent a beautiful day visiting the Emberá Indigenous village along the Río Chagres in Panamá 🌿 Surrounded by rainforest, the village offers a powerful reminder of how deeply culture, land, and river are connected. From traditional music and dance to intricate hand-crafted art, every moment felt grounded in history, resilience, and living knowledge passed down through generations. Grateful for the welcome, the stories, and the chance to experience a way of life that honors nature and community. 💚🌴

For my birthday this year, I’m asking for one thing that truly matters to me: help me give a chance at safety and dignity to animals who have no voice. I volunteer with Spay Panama's Animals USA-Panama and I’ve seen the reality up close — the families who love their pets but can’t afford sterilizations, and the homeless animals who show up with no one in the world looking out for them. These surgeries change lives. Sometimes they even save them. My birthday goal is simple but powerful: enough donations to sterilize four cats and one dog. It might not sound like much, but it is. One unsterilized cat and her offspring can create up to 5,000 kittens in seven years. One dog can lead to hundreds of puppies. Preventing just five surgeries can stop thousands of animals from being born only to suffer, starve, or be abandoned.
I live a quiet life, and my rescue animals have always been my family. So when people come together to help, it doesn’t just support the animals — it makes me feel connected, seen, and supported in a way that means more than I can put into words. If you want to celebrate my birthday with me, please consider making a donation through Cumple Con Causa. Even a small amount can spare an animal from a lifetime of hardship. Thank you for caring. ☮🐾💜
