TIP 3 - Which Part Of The Reading Section Do A Lot Of Students Struggle With Understanding?

This tip is one that deserves your attention because most individuals taking the test are curious about this part of the Reading section... and want answers!

It is the True/False/Not Given question.

So let's address the elephant in the room (idiom)!
What exactly does True/False/Not Given mean?

True = the SAME meaning
TRUE if the statement agrees with the information

False = mentioned, BUT NOT the same meaning
FALSE if the statement contradicts the information

Not Given = NOT MENTIONED at all, or not mentioned specifically
NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this statement

Here's a 5-step approach to addressing this part of the exam:

STEP I: Identify keywords in the statement
STEP II: Identify similar words in the passage
STEP III: Match the keywords and the similar words
STEP IV: Evaluate if they are the same, synonyms, or opposites or if there's no match
STEP V: Decide whether the statement is True, False, or Not Given

A couple of common mistakes are:

A) Never try to answer based on your prior knowledge of the topic.
The passage could be slightly different from your prior knowledge of the topic. Making assumptions can cost you a good IELTS score. Read the complete passage and then answer the questions based only on the given information.

B) Don't get confused between False and Not Given.
This may sound obvious. But the statement does not necessarily have to be either True or False. At times the information may not be given in the passage.

Additional tips

The statements usually follow a chronological order. Once you find the first answer, proceed to the next sentence.

Beware of those words that can slightly change the meaning of the sentence. For example, many, some, never, few, all, always, etc.

Don't waste too much time on one question. If you can't find one, mark it Not Given.

* Once you have practiced and perfected the step-by-step strategy multiple times, it will get easier.

TIP 2- Time Is Not On Your Side! Time Management Has To Be Applied While Taking The IELTS Exam.

Remember during yesterday's Reading tip, I said that you will more than likely run out of time reading all 3 passages? Well, the skimming and the scanning technique are just 1 part of the solution!

How you manage your time for the Reading part will determine as to rather you complete this section or not.

Today, we're just going to continue our focus on the Reading section for the time management discussion. Below is the breakdown regarding the allotted time given for the Reading section of the exam.

Reading 60 minutes 3 sections 40 items

Now by doing some basic division, it appears that we should be setting aside approx. 20 minutes for each of the 3 sections... but that's not accurate! I also mentioned in yesterday's tip that the first section was the easiest, the second section was a little harder, and finally, the last section was the hardest.

So, it only makes sense that we dedicate as much time as we can to the 3rd and last section, wouldn't you agree? What's recommended is that you spend around 15 minutes on the first section, 20 minutes on the second section, and around 25 minutes on the third section.

You need to get practice reading and scanning for material rapidly because you only have 60 minutes to answer 40 questions. One more thing to keep in mind is that you should make it a habit to read all kinds of literature leading up to the exam.

Watches are not allowed in the test room. Every test room will have a clock on the wall.

Be conscious of the start time for each section while trying not to focus so much on the time. Yes, I know that sounds like a bit of a challenge, but it really isn't. Glancing up at the clock a couple of times within the 20-minute window should suffice enough in order to manage your time adequately.

We will continue to tie in other tips, that with practice, can dramatically improve your overall Band score.

TIP 1 - Concerns People Have About The Reading Comprehension Section

Question - For the reading comprehension section, is it recommended that I read the whole passage?

No, you do not! There are 3 lengthy paragraphs in the IELTS Academic Reading part, and they get harder as they go. So the first one will be a little simpler than the second, and the last one will be more challenging than the second.

For this reason, it is likely that you will run out of time before you reach the third and final section if you spend too much time on the first passage (a mistake many candidates make for the first time). Trust me, you don't want to waste time taking this exam a second time over something that can be conquered on the first try!

Now you're probably wondering, "So if I shouldn't read each passage in full, then how am I supposed to know what I'm reading?".

So glad you asked!

Since you won't have enough time to go through all 3 paragraphs, you don't need to read the passage from beginning to end in order to respond to the questions. Therefore, you can use specific abilities and techniques that will benefit you instead of doing that.

Skimming and scanning are the two reading techniques that are most crucial to master when completing this part of the exam.

Read the text to understand the general meaning or the big picture which is also called ‘skimming’. Then look at the questions related to the passage and look for the specific information that the questions are asking you about. For this you need to engage in ‘scanning’, looking for the answers to those questions.

Remember, you're NOT looking for a "keyword", but an answer that you feel is the closest thing to the question you have been asked.

You then strategically respond to the IELTS Academic Reading questions using these abilities.

Skimming and scanning take practice, and that's where I can assist! Time is not on your side with this exam, so learning how to skim and scan will be critical to your overall success in the Reading section of the exam.
