A practical and engaging science-learning activity was conducted in the school garden to help students understand the different parts of a plant body through direct observation and hands-on exploration. The activity was designed to encourage students to look at their surroundings not simply as a garden, but as young science learners who observe, question, investigate, and draw conclusions from what they see.
Instead of learning plant parts only through textbooks and diagrams, students were allowed to observe real plants in their natural environment and identify their structures.
*Activity Procedure*
The students were taken to the school garden and encouraged to observe the plants. They were asked to think like scientists and investigate the plants around them.
Hands-on Investigation
After observing the plants, students carried out a practical activity to reinforce their understanding.
Some students carefully cut small sections of plant stems and placed/pasted them on paper. They then identified and labelled the different visible parts of the plant.
Other students examined small plants with their roots attached, allowing them to observe the plant as a complete structure. This helped students understand that the plant body consists of interconnected parts, with each part performing an important function.
Students prepared their own labelled work by identifying the:

The activity helped students understand that a plant is not simply a green organism growing in soil; rather, it is an organized living system in which different parts perform different functions.

The garden-based science activity was a meaningful experiential learning experience that transformed the school garden into a natural science laboratory. Students were able to move beyond memorizing names and functions and actually see, touch, observe, investigate, and identify plant structures.
The activity reinforced the idea that science is not confined to textbooks or classrooms. Science is all around us, and every garden can become a laboratory when we learn to observe it scientifically.
