In linguistics, this is officially called a "glottal stop". Imagine you're saying, "uh-oh!" and how you stop after each h very abruptly-- that's this letter! Which is why we usually skip it in dialect. 😂

Sometimes I know where I want to go, sometimes I get lucky with a good Google search. This was the latter. It was so cute. We'll definitely go back again in the winter when we can sit outside!

The first word is a good example of how this letter changes. In some dialects, it functions as a vowel, and in some, more like a consonant! ⁠You can also see in these words that it matters A LOT which harakat ( ِ َ ُ ) it has! That can be so tricky, since it isn't written on most things.

"...and sometimes Y." That's how it works in Arabic, too! Sometimes it's a consonant (at the beginning) and sometimes it's a vowel (in the middle or at the end!).

At the beginning of a word (not counting an ال on the word!), و functions like a consonant. In the middle or the end, it functions as a vowel!

Another name I have for this one is the "easy haa". 😂⁠But when I'm trying to pronounce it in the middle or end of a word, I sometimes give it too much weight. Gosh, pronunciation can be so hard to master!
