Right next door, a whole world to explore 🌿

Just over the fence from their playground, our Fantail tamariki have their very own patch of nature to discover — grassy hills to climb, fences to peer through, and soil to sink little hands into. With a steady hand nearby, they're free to wander, wobble, and get delightfully muddy along the way.

For our youngest explorers, this kind of outdoor freedom builds gross motor skills, balance, and confidence — while natural textures like grass, wood, and soil spark early sensory learning.

Meet the heart of the Pukeko Room! 🌿

Leading the way for our Pukeko tamariki (aged 2.5 to 3.5 years) is Head Teacher Emma, alongside her fantastic team — Lindie and Shivani. Together they bring warmth, patience, and genuine skill in supporting tamariki through big feelings and even bigger discoveries, helping every child feel safe, understood, and ready to explore.

Their ability to guide tamariki through emotions with such care shines through every day — building trust, confidence, and connection at every turn.

Building castles, one flower at a time! 🏰🌸

Our Kiwi tamariki got creative with our "Make Your Own Garden Castle" provocation this week — stacking magnetic tiles into towering structures, threading colourful flowers into blooming towers, and decorating block castles with sparkling gems. Every tamariki brought their own vision to life, one piece at a time.

Open-ended building play like this supports spatial awareness, planning, fine motor skills, and creative problem-solving — while giving tamariki full ownership over what they create.

Something to spot on the horizon... 🐑👀

Our Kiwi tamariki have been watching and waiting, and last week the wait paid off — new lambs have arrived on the farm next door! From the fence line, our little observers spotted them in the distance, pointing, watching, and buzzing with excitement at every wobbly step.

At Whitford ELC, our 5 acres and our own alpaca trio are just the beginning. We're surrounded by an even wider natural world — paddocks, farmland, and now, a whole new generation of lambs to observe and learn from. In true Reggio Emilia spirit, we believe the environment is a teacher too, and there's always something new just beyond the fence to spark curiosity, patience, and wonder.

Dino dig day in the Tui Room! 🦕🎨

Our Tui tamariki became palaeontologists for the day — digging for hidden dinosaur bones in the sensory tray, uncovering fossil skulls in the "jungle," and finishing with a stomp: using dinosaur feet to paint footprints and handprints across the paper.

Multi-sensory play like this builds fine motor strength, cause-and-effect thinking, and hands-on science exploration — all while tamariki lead the discovery themselves.

Flour, oil, a splash of colour — and a very hands-on audience. Rebekah whipped up a batch of playdoh with some of our Tui tamariki this week, and they were straight in there helping mix, squish, and knead.

(Listen closely and you'll hear a chorus of "Joe the Blower!" in the background — Joe's morning rounds never go unnoticed 😄🍃)

Making playdoh (not just playing with it) is where the real learning happens — measuring, pouring, watching things change, and using those little hand muscles that'll help with writing down the track. Plus, there's something pretty special about watching an adult they trust make something just for them.

Together they create a space filled with gentle care, warm cuddles, and endless patience, helping our little ones feel safe, secure, and ready to explore.

From first smiles to first steps, this team is there for every milestone — building the trust and connection that gives our tamariki the confidence to grow.

Snowy Penguin Adventure! 🐧❄️

Our Kiwi Room tamariki stepped into their very own winter wonderland today — we used salt to create a magical snow world just for our penguin friends! Little explorers dove straight in, letting their imaginations run wild as they journeyed through icy landscapes and Antarctic adventures.

This kind of open-ended, messy play sparks imaginative storytelling, sensory exploration, and fine motor skills — all while tamariki lead their own learning through play.
