Open Spaces Preschool. The natural choice for early learning. Our hours are: 7:30am - 4:30pm. Open Spaces Wild Woods Programme is unique in Northland.

Our centre is located next to a family trust farm, where we have access to the 'back' of the farm - an area of native trees four paddocks back from Ngunguru Road. Some of the trees in the area are over 400 years old!. This bush slopes down to the Waitangi Stream which eventually joins the Ngunguru River. The area has become know to the children as "The Wild Woods" (borrowed from Claire Warden in Scotland).

It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to our beautiful Lily today.

Our dear girl has been with Open Spaces since 2010 and she has lived a very loved life. We will always remember Lily bounding down her paddock to collect treats and neck scratches from our tamariki.

Lily had reached the ripe old age of 20+, but her body has been deteriorating and we didn't want her to suffer through another cold winter.

We will miss Lily so much, but hopefully she is in a better place and can rest easy now.

Our new māra kai (food garden) has really grown into something special. We have been readily feasting on our delicious vegetables!

Our new gardens are thriving!! We are so excited to watch everything grow. The tamariki are doing a great job looking after our mara kai 🥒🫛🫑🍅

Its been a huge weekend of mahi at Open Spaces! Rob and I worked really hard creating a new space for mara kai. We were donated 3 kiwifruit boxes to use as raised garden beds, huge thanks to Zeke and the team at Huanui Fresh!

This whole area transformation was done using recycled materials and lots of hard mahi, so we're really excited that is cost us zero dollars!!

The kaiako are getting their thinking caps on as to what we're going to plant - but so excited our vision has finally come to life....watch this space!

Lately our tamariki have been learning about the pests that lurk in our native bush, and what we can do to combat the destruction they cause our ngahere. We had Pete from Northland Regional Council and Judy from Enviroschools come along to set some tracking cards in the Wild Woods. These cards help our tamariki identify which pests we have in the Wild Woods by what their footprints look like.

Pete and Judy came back after a few days to check the tracking cards, and we discovered a possum had run through one! Pete brought in some examples of one of the pests we see in our forests - a couple of stuffed rats, ewww! 🐀 Pete also brought in some cool photos of other pests the children might recognise.

What a great way for our tamariki to learn about native forests and how we can help save them.
