Oral Literacy (Language – talking & listening)

When we consider tamariki, gaining skills to support them towards success with reading and writing language is the foundation for all future learning.
Within the centre, kaiako have a variety of ways to support growing language (words & their meanings) when observing tamariki within their play – ensuring we have strategies and resources that will help guide and grow their learning.
Here is a sample of some of the learning we have noticed with a focus on oral literacy
Nanny Mon has been introducing interactive waiata with our whānau. Waiata often provides opportunities for the tamariki to explore rhythm & rhyme. The repetition of words teaches tamariki to anticipate the rhyming word and this, in turn, prepares them to make predictions when they read.
The tamariki can often be seen throughout the day engaged in waiata sessions with Terangi. Music is a great way to grow language. This is one way we incorporate te reo Māori into our every day play.
Our whānau can often be observed and heard discussing their thoughts, feelings & ideas with their peers & kaiako whilst engaging in small group play experiences. Through their play, this gives them plenty of opportunities to practice their language.
Our tamariki can retell or create their own stories and share them with their Three Little Birds whānau.

Within te ruma kiwi kaiako support and integrate our kaupapa even with our youngest whānau as we believe they are as competent and building language starts from infancy.
Within our te ruma kiwi, whānau participate in kai karakia with our kaiako and are surrounded by rich language during our kai rituals, they are included in waiata sessions and can often be seen engaging with our poi and rākau together with the support of their kaiako.
Books and reading is also seen throughout the day. Often the tamariki can be seen reading books for themselves, retelling favourite stories previously read with kaiako and the monthly visit from the library bus is also hugely popular.

Ngā mihi nui whānau for your koha Our tamariki and kaiako are prepping! Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Hikurangi Christmas Parade !
Wow what a fun day and what an awesome turnout for the parade today !
Our dedicated kaiako spent their time after hours creating decorations for our biggest float to date! Our Kiwi Christmas Float was a great reflection of Christmas at Three Little Birds.
Whānau, sun, kiwi imagery, pohutakwa trees, and lots of fun and laughter!
Big Ngā Mihi to Mike Marsters and Mainfreight for the truck!
We felt blessed to have so many of our tamariki join us in the float and join in with the fun!
The bonus 2nd prize awarded!

The tamariki have been creative within our mahi toi space making decorations for the tree.

12 days of Kiwi Christmas book has come out and we had so many tamariki singing with great gusto remembering the words from last year.
