Our 11th Intake 2022:
Tamati Paraone

Yesterday we marched in and badged the 11th Intake under the name Tamati Paraone, at Otiria marae.

Tomorrow the Leadership Academy of A Company marches in the first ever ANZAC Dusk Service at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in front of Te Rau Aroha.

Old boys are asked to be at the Waka Gate down by the entrance to the Treaty grounds by 4.30pm latest.

Captain Harding Waipuke Leaf was a soldier and second in command of the 28 (Māori) Battalion’s A Company. A veteran of the First World War, Harding was unwilling to let young Māori men go to war without support. Despite being over the maximum age limit, Harding fought to enlist in the Second World War to be the support that the young men needed.
While in service in the Second World War, Harding wrote home often to his family, especially his son Lomond (Jock). Harding was killed in action on Crete in the Second World War, while in temporary command of C Company, but his war trunk and contents were returned to his family. His grandchildren have kindly loaned many of his personal possessions to Te Rau Aroha Museum of the Price of Citizenship, including this letter to Jock.
Harding's life story is being told in a documentary, filmed in Northland, where the Leaf family live, including footage filmed at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, called 'Shark of War'. Family members and historian Dr Monty Soutar tell Harding's story, as well as the effect of his life and death on Harding’s whānau. The documentary has been made by 2B Media for Māori TV. Lawrence Watt of Moa Films, who is co-producer, says he has wanted to tell Harding's story for over two decades, after first hearing about him from 28 (Māori) Battalion members. Harding was a larger-than-life character, and the documentary makers have put many of Harding's legionary stories into the documentary as possible. There is a sad feeling about the trunk, as it came back, and of course Harding did not.
The documentary will screen on Māori Television on Anzac Day. The time is yet to be announced.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 2nd March, Te Kapehu Whetu Teina & Tuakana as a kura, will be attending the tangi of Whaea Eileen Ramach at Motatau Marae. Whaea Eileen has tamaiti within the Tuakana and Teina at Te Kāpehu Whetu.

Whaea Eileen was one of the long times serving Pouako at Mokopuna Moerewa for over 20 years plus. As a kura, we would like to tautoko her whanau at this time.

COVID RESTRICTIONS
We understand that at this time during the Covid 19, whanau are reluctant for your tamaiti to attend large gathering’s.
Motatau Marae has a number of 25 in the Marae at a time. If you feel that your tamaiti should not attend, please let us know.
We will be travelling by bus and wearing of masks and sanitizer on hand as normal protocol. If your tamaiti is not feeling well, please keep them at home.

The Kura will be closed, so no ākonga are to come to kura āpopo unless they are attending the tangi.

Our BUS will come to Paenuku and Paetata Locations. Normal drop off and wananga will continue

COVID POSTIVE CASE UPDATE

Thank you to our whanau for your patience. Today we received confirmation of a student who was tested positive for COVID. The student was on site on the 4th of February and did not return to school this week. This was the only day the student was onsite.

We have heard back from MoE and MoH and our positive COVID case has been deemed NOT INFECTIOUS while she was present at kura on Friday the 4th Feb 2022. Kura will remain open.

The specialists have confirmed that the student’s contagious period was the 7th & 8th of February; she was kept home during those days.

We have arranged a deep clean for our all our Kura Teina including Paenuku & Paetata as a precautionary step.

We do encourage whaanau to get tested if they have any symptoms and to stay home until results are received.

We also appreciate all the whanau that attended our COVID hui today and offered support for those in Self Isolation.

We urge all our whaanau to be prepared for a COVID Positive case. Te Uri o Hau, Ngati Hine, Te Hauawhiowhio and Ngatiwai Kaimanaaki provide support for whaanau in Self Isolation after a Positive Case.

Once again thank you for your understanding and your patience as we worked through the process with the whaanau, Kura, MoH and MOE.
