Kindergartens have been part of New Zealand culture for over 100 years and continue to be the leaders in Early Childhood Education.

The Northland Kindergarten Association (NKA) currently has 25 wonderful kindergartens each with a unique character and feel that mirror the community and environment in which they are situated. Our Kindergartens don’t just provide a service for a community they are part of the community “Giving our children an excellent start for lifelong learning”. Our strategic plan has been developed in line wi

th the Governments strategic plan, Pathways to the Future: Nga Huarahi Arataki 2012. We strive to provide the best possible Early Childhood Education (ECE) available for the tamariki/children of Northland. The NKA provides the most comprehensive ECE available in New Zealand at present, including specialist services such as an Early Intervention Advisor to support children’s development, behaviour or communication; Speech & Language Therapist to support any aspect of children’s communication; and a Pou Whakarewa Tikanga Maori (Maori Advisor) to enhance the bicultural practices within the NKA and the individual kindergartens.

Why Outdoor Learning?

Some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the kindergarten gate.

At NKA, tamariki are encouraged to explore, discover and build a connection with the world around them through nature-based and place-based learning.
From native bush and wetlands to community spaces and Northland's coastline, 12 of our 25 Northland kindergartens run weekly Nature Programmes, taking tamariki into local community spaces, native bush, wetlands and along Northland's coastline.

Growing Language Skills Through Stories 💛
It’s NZ Children’s Book Week, a great opportunity to celebrate the magic of books and the important role stories play in children’s learning.

At NKA, books, stories and kōrero are part of everyday kindergarten life. Reading together helps tamariki build vocabulary, develop listening and communication skills, understand emotions, and use their imagination.

"Is it fire pit day today?" 🔥

At Portland Kindergarten, fire pit day is one of the highlights of the week, and it’s easy to see why!

From making bread dough and cooking over the fire to choosing their favourite toppings, tamariki are learning, creating and building confidence through this hands-on experience.

But it’s about so much more than freshly baked bread. Fire pit day helps children develop teamwork, independence, safety skills and a sense of pride in what they can achieve.

Through everyday play, tamariki learn so much more than games and activities.

They discover how to share, take turns, communicate their ideas, solve problems together, and show kindness and empathy towards others.

These everyday interactions help children build confidence, develop important social skills, and create meaningful connections that support their learning and wellbeing.

Guided by our 100% qualified kaiako, every play experience becomes an opportunity to grow, connect and belong.

Forest View Kindergarten was recently honoured to welcome Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga from Tikipunga High School – tuakana from the very same whenua the kindergarten stands on.

Bridget Crossley, Pouako Kaiako at Forest View Kindergarten, describes the moment the first waiata and haka filled their space, and how the the tamariki were captivated.

At Northland Kindergarten Association, many of our kindergartens are part of the Enviroschools programme. This a hands-on way for tamariki to connect with and care for their environment.

Through everyday actions like gardening, composting, recycling and growing food, children experience curiosity, excitement and the joy of learning about the natural world.

Each kindergarten shapes its own Enviroschools Aotearoa NZ journey, reflecting our communities, cultures and local environments. Along the way, tamariki are empowered to explore, take action and develop the knowledge, skills and values to care for their world.

It’s all part of growing confident, connected, and environmentally aware learners.
