Whangārei Boys High International Developing boys into fine young men since 1881. Like, follow and share their journey in NZ

Open your home. Share your life. Change theirs.

WBHS International is currently looking for local host families to welcome international students into their homes and whānau.

Hosting is a unique opportunity to share a little of Kiwi life and culture, while gaining a connection to another culture and often building lifelong friendships along the way. Many of our host families stay connected with their students for years to come, with students becoming an extended part of the family long after their time in New Zealand ends.

Host families receive $320 per week to help support hosting costs, but for many families the most rewarding part is the experience, connection, and relationships formed along the way.

We welcome expressions of interest from all types of households and family situations. We are particularly keen in hearing from families with an interest in sport and the outdoors — but we’d love to hear from anyone interested in learning more.

If hosting is something you’ve ever thought about, or you’d simply like to ask a few questions, please contact Shaun on 021 193 4649 or [email protected]

Andrew has settled in well already - engaging positively in class, making new friends, and connecting well with his host family.

Welcome to WBHS, Andrew. We look forward to sharing in your experiences and journey while you’re here!

Today, we farewell Felix (sad face emoji)

Felix applied to join us VERY late. We offered him a place on Christmas Day!

Felix celebrated his 17th birthday here. Learned the school haka. Found a new hobby. Formed lifelong friendships. Tried kina. Learned how to manu. Cycled and/or hiked every track he could find. Learned to surf. And much more !

In just 20 weeks, Felix did more, saw more, and experienced more than many do in 20 years. More importantly, he added huge value to our international programme, our school, and every person lucky enough to cross paths with him.

Felix - thank you for everything you brought to our community. We wish you all the very best for the journey home and whatever adventure comes next.

Haere rā, e hoa. Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui.

So cool! This term, one of our German international students has been taking part in Year 12 Whakairo - traditional Māori art of carving.

What makes it even more impressive, is how quickly he’s picked up the skills! To be able to head home with a handcrafted taonga (treasured possession) like this is more than just taking home a project. It’s taking home a connection to Aotearoa and to the experiences shared during his time in Whangārei.

Making the most of every opportunity at

Gento lives and breathes basketball, and it’s been awesome having him in our Junior Basketball Academy this term.

Here he is (repping his Unaunahi PE top) with some of his academy teammates and new friends - who are sad to see him leaving us at the end of the week.

Last week‘s trip to the Bay of Islands for was a clear standout.

From night kayaking through glowing bioluminescence, to snorkelling and diving for kina (not everyone’s favourite 😂)… every moment was an experience.

Sharing European bread cooked over the open fire, jumping off the boat, swimming, plenty of table tennis and pool – simple moments, great company.

Lots of smiles, lots of laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime!

Motuarohia Island lookout in the Bay of Islands

Perfect spot for a hike up to the top, kayaking through the bay, and relaxing on the sand. The 360° views were unreal — we could even see where we’d been snorkeling earlier. Shout to our Felix who picked up 8 kina!

Day 1 in the Bay of Islands - Part 1

A visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds — a place that carries deep history, culture, and meaning. Standing where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed was a powerful reminder of the stories that shape this land, the partnership between peoples, and the importance of understanding the past to move forward together.

Grateful for the chance to learn, reflect, and experience something far beyond just a beautiful destination.
