Sometimes parents wait until an assessment is just around the corner before looking for extra support.

But getting help earlier gives your teen time to build understanding, confidence and better study habits, without the pressure of a looming deadline.

If something isn't quite clicking, don't be afraid to ask for help.

The right support at the right time can make learning feel much more manageable.

Practice makes a difference

One of the best ways to help your teen prepare for the September exams is to make sure they know what to expect.

NZQA past assessments can help your teen:
• understand the question format
• practise working within a time limit
• get comfortable reading and answering on screen
• identify areas where they may need more support

Encourage your teen to have a go at a past paper before the exams. It can turn “I don’t know what to expect” into “I’ve done this before.”

When study becomes a battle

Homework and study can become stressful for the whole family.

If your teen is frustrated, avoiding work or saying they “just don’t get it”, pushing harder isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes they need a different explanation, a confidence boost, or someone to help them figure out where they’re getting stuck.

As a parent, you don’t have to know all the answers. Helping your teen find the right support can be just as valuable.

September exams are coming

The co-req exams are coming up in September. Is your teen ready for digital assessment?

There are a few simple things parents can check now:
• Is their MyNZQA account set up?
• Do they know their username and password?
• Is their device working properly?
• Have they had a chance to practise using the digital assessment platform?

Getting these things sorted early can remove some of the stress when assessment day arrives.

A little preparation now can make a big difference.

Learning also happens beyond the classroom.

At Thinking Caps, we know that learning doesn't stop when the school day ends or the tutoring session is over.

Being part of a community can be an important part of that too, whether that's trying something new, developing practical skills, meeting different people or finding something that sparks their curiosity.

As a local learning business, we're proud to be part of the Hibiscus Coast and to support the young people and families who live here.

Because learning isn't just about what happens in the classroom. It's also about growing in confidence, discovering strengths and finding new ways to understand and experience the world around us.

Reading, writing and maths: why the focus matters

There has been a lot happening in New Zealand education, with a growing focus on strengthening the foundations of learning, particularly reading, writing and mathematics.

New changes announced this month will place a stronger focus on educational achievement in school planning, while from 2027 parents will receive twice-yearly reports showing their child's progress and achievement, attendance, next learning steps and information about support where needed.

These changes are part of a much wider focus on foundational learning across New Zealand schools.

But behind all the policy changes is something that matters to every learner:

Strong foundations make future learning easier.

When a child is struggling with reading, writing or maths, it isn't simply about getting the right answer in a test. Difficulties with foundational skills can affect confidence, participation and their ability to access learning across other subjects.

That's why identifying where a learner is getting stuck and finding the right way to support them, matters.

At Thinking Caps, we believe every learner deserves to understand how they learn best, have their strengths recognised and receive support that helps them move forward.

Education may be changing, but the importance of strong foundations isn't.

This interactive Learner Licence Course is designed to support different learning styles while helping young people build their knowledge, understanding and confidence before test day.

With NZTA Waka Kotahi-approved facilitators who have a strong track record of helping young people succeed, students will work through the road rules, ask questions and learn in a supportive environment.

Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September
10am–3pm
Test Day: Friday 2 October
Cost: $60, including lunch each day
Where: C*C Trust, 733 Whangaparaoa Road, Stanmore Bay

With school expectations rising in New Zealand, it’s more important than ever that children have the skills they need to keep up with classroom learning.

But what happens when a child is trying hard and still struggling?

At Thinking Caps, we understand that learning difficulties aren't always about a child simply needing to try harder.

Sometimes children need:
• concepts broken down into smaller steps
• more opportunities to practise and consolidate skills
• information explained in a different way
• support with the underlying skills that make reading, writing and maths possible
• help connecting what they already know with what they are expected to learn next
We understand the skills children are expected to develop at school and what is needed to support them to get there.

That means we can look beyond “They're struggling” and ask:
What skills are missing?
What is getting in the way?
What do they need to learn next?

Thinking Caps provides targeted support to help children build the skills, confidence and understanding they need to make progress.

You don't have to wait until your child is significantly behind before seeking support.

Sometimes getting the right help early can make all the difference.
