We love hearing how our KidsLink webinars are supporting teachers and educators across Aotearoa.

Here’s what one teacher from Northern Health School had to say:
“I’m really enjoying the sessions you arrange.”
— Teacher, Northern Health School

Our webinars bring together experienced professionals to share practical insights, ideas and strategies for those supporting children and young people.

We’re grateful to everyone who takes the time to join us, learn with us and share their feedback.

Thank you for being part of the KidsLink community.

A school report doesn’t always tell the whole story

A school report or assessment result can give you an idea of how your child is progressing, but there’s often more to understand.

Some useful questions to ask are:
• What does my child understand well?
• Where are they finding things difficult?
• Are there gaps in their learning?
• Do they feel confident asking for help?
• What support would make the biggest difference?

Every child learns differently. Understanding where they are now can be the first step towards giving them the right support and helping them move forward with confidence.

And if your child is struggling, you don’t necessarily have to wait for the next report or assessment to do something about it.
Early support can make a difference.

There’s a lot of discussion at the moment about the Government’s proposed restrictions on social media for under-16s.

Whatever the outcome, it’s a good opportunity for parents to think about the digital habits their children are developing now.

Healthy technology use isn’t just about how much time children spend online. It’s also about what they’re seeing, how it makes them feel, whether it’s affecting their sleep, and whether they have a healthy balance between online and offline life.

A few simple things can help:
• Talk regularly about what your child is seeing online
• Set clear expectations around when devices are used
• Make space for screen-free time, especially before bed
• Encourage activities away from screens
• Keep communication open so your child feels comfortable coming to you if something online worries them

Technology is part of children’s lives. Helping them develop healthy habits and make good choices is something we can start working on now.

Getting support isn't a sign that you've failed.

Sometimes it's simply a sign that you're paying attention, asking questions and doing what you can to help your child.

Getting extra support doesn't mean a child isn't capable.

It might mean they need a different approach, a little more time, some targeted strategies or help to build confidence in an area they find challenging.

And support doesn't always have to wait until a child is significantly behind.

Sometimes getting the right help early can make learning feel easier, less frustrating and more achievable.

Every child learns differently. Finding the right support can make a difference.

Here’s a little parent translation:

“They need support with executive functioning.”
→ They may be finding planning, organising, remembering or getting started difficult.

“They have difficulty processing information.”
→ They may need more time or a different way of receiving information.

“They are capable, but they're not consistently demonstrating their ability.”
→ They may understand more than they're currently able to show.

Sometimes the language used around learning can feel like another language altogether.

Understanding what people mean can make it much easier to know what questions to ask next.

Which Professional Do I Need?

“My child is struggling. But who do I actually need to talk to?”

It can be surprisingly difficult to know where to start.

Is it a tutor?

A psychologist?

A speech-language therapist?

An occupational therapist?

A learning specialist?

A counsellor?

Or someone else entirely?

And sometimes, the challenge you're seeing at home isn't actually telling you what the underlying issue is.

That’s why finding the right support can feel overwhelming.

KidsLink brings together a range of services for children and families, making it easier to explore your options and find a place to start.

11:03pm: “Why does my child hate reading?”

11:17pm: “Signs of dyslexia”

11:31pm: “Why can my child concentrate on Minecraft but not homework?”

11:48pm: “Who can help my child with learning?”

If you’ve ever found yourself down an internet rabbit hole late at night, wondering what might be going on with your child, you’re definitely not alone.

The tricky part is that the same challenge can have lots of different reasons behind it.

You don’t have to diagnose the problem yourself.

KidsLink helps families find services and professionals who can support children across learning, development, wellbeing and more.

Sometimes the most useful first step is simply knowing where to start.

Supporting a child who is finding learning difficult rarely comes down to one person or one solution.

Parents know their child best.
Teachers see them in the learning environment.
Specialists can help uncover challenges and provide targeted support.

When these people work together, we can build a much clearer picture of what a child needs and help them feel understood rather than simply labelled as struggling.

That’s at the heart of KidsLink.

We’re building a community that connects families, schools and trusted professionals so children and young people can access the right support at the right time.

Because sometimes, the most important step is simply finding the right people to help.

Did you know?
Seeing clearly isn’t always the same as learning easily

A child can have healthy eyesight and still experience challenges with how their brain processes visual information.

Visual processing helps us interpret what we see — including tracking, organising, and making sense of information on a page.

When these skills are difficult, reading and learning can become more tiring and frustrating.

Understanding these differences helps us recognise when a child may need additional support.
