On 12 September, the Museum's Atrium will be filled with the sweet sounds of Appassionata – Whanganui Collegiate School’s student 'a capella' ensemble. Combining rich harmonies, infectious energy and a shared love of music, these talented singers perform a wonderful mix of modern and gospel hits, timeless favourites and vocal arrangements.

Yeahoo nearly half way through the term. It’s busy
I tell you.

⭐️My new students have settled in well and my usual crew are super-starring along with some new tricky songs/ pieces. Sienna Spiro and Adele are favourites for singers along with quite a few musical theatre numbers.⭐️

I’m excited to see some of my students along with a bunch of other Whanganui Collegiate School students perform in their play tonight. There are still tickets for tonight and tomorrow - so snap them up while you can. Staff, crew and actors have worked really hard and I’m looking forward to seeing it! 🎫🎟️

Welcome back to Term 3 at the studio! 🎶✨

It’s so wonderful seeing all my returning students again, and I’ve even managed to squeeze in two new singers from lovely families who have been on my waitlist for quite a while! 🌟 It’s always fun meeting new young kids, hearing their dreams and musical passions, and figuring out how I can help them grow. 🎤💫

My older students are diving straight into a busy term—prepping for upcoming competitions, shows, and working on new songs. 🎭🎼

I still need to figure out how to clone myself about four times, but until science catches up there is just one of me.

I had a really cool holiday break - with catch-ups with friends, plenty of singing, outdoor adventures, kids' sports, and quality family hangs.

Here’s to a fantastic, music-filled Term 3! 🎉✨

Congrats to cast and crew of Otaki Players Society - we came down to see Jagged Little Pill. I grew up with this album - absolutely iconic.

Whanganui Girls' College - ‘The Night Witches’ - tonight only

The stage lights return, after seven years since their last school production, Whanganui Girls College proudly brings “The Night Witches” to the stage. This production is based on real-life female Soviet pilots who flew bombing missions in the 588th Night Bomber Regiment during WWII. The young navigators flew Polikarpov po-2 biplanes during the night, and cut their engines to glide silently as they approached their target. They were named The Night Witches by the Germans, who feared their bombing raids.

The beauty of the show lies within the hearts of those involved. Over the past several months, a cast of 45, alongside the backstage crew, have dedicated countless hours to the interpretation of this production.

Director Chloe Franklin-Browne and Head of Arts Caroline Rhodes were inspired to recreate this play after discovering the remarkable history of the female soviet pilots, and the role they played in empowering female leadership. Mrs Franklin-Browne states that amidst all the chaos, the most rewarding part is watching the production come together.

Mrs Rhodes explains that performing arts provides endless opportunities for young people. Theatre offers invaluable experiences. It teaches people resilience and how to communicate through body language.

From the cast, “Portraying a character from a historical period has helped me to develop a deeper understanding of history.”

“It’s incredible to watch one another grow. The collaborative nature of theatre is truly extraordinary”.

The Night Witches serve as a powerful reminder that despite discrimination, young people can accomplish groundbreaking achievements. Their bravery and determination inspire today's generation to challenge limitations and embrace leadership.

We applaud not only the cast, but all of those who have worked behind the scenes.
The show starts at 7pm and will be in the school hall. Tickets cost $10 and are available for tonight only, as the other nights are fully booked. Check with the school office.

From Burgmüller to Broadway: Whanganui Music Students Aged 4 to 90 Shine at Winter Showcase
16 singers and pianists from "Love Singing with Lizzie" delight local family and friends with everything from traditional classics to The Beatles and Wicked.

An audience of studio whānau and supporters were treated to a special celebration of local talent yesterday afternoon, as 16 local students from private music studio "Love Singing with Lizzie" gathered to share their music for the studio’s annual Winter Showcase, held at Dempsey and Forrest.

The afternoon concert brought together a cross-section of Lizzie’s students - proving that passion for music knows no age limits. The program featured a mix of vocalists and pianists ranging in age from a four-year-old making their very first public performance to an inspiring 90-year-old student.

The music was diverse. The studio's pianists performed traditional piano repertoire and contemporary pop piano solos. Meanwhile, the vocal performances included some legendary tracks, such as hits from The Beatles and Bon Jovi to musical theatre numbers from Broadway productions, including Les Misérables, Wicked, Waitress, and Jekyll & Hyde.

Studio director Lizzie expressed immense pride in the achievements of her students, saying that the concert was designed to celebrate individual growth, build confidence, and for students to share what they have been learning in a safe space.

The event was generously hosted by Dempsey and Forrest, providing the students with a beautiful space and lovely big piano to share their work with proud family members, friends, and supporters.
