Wow! What a find!

Has Critter of the Week led to the discovery of a new species?! 😮

Last week's critter, a fish parasite called the tongue louse, was illustrated by some photos of an unfortunate butterfish from Whenua Hou Codfish Island 🐟

But when Wikipedian Mike Dickison sent the photos to a tongue louse expert for species identification, the expert came back with a scientific surprise. Turns out, this creepy crustacean may well be a new species...

Māori place names and the pūrakau behind those names can help inform us about the safety of water for swimming.

This article tells us about a couple of our local awa, Whangaehu and Turakina.

There is some excellent research going on nationally. The Bioheritage Science Challenge Crazy Ambitious Conference is on its final day of proceedings.

In this short video clip, the environmental history of lake Oporoa in the Rangitikei showcases Matauranga and Science. I especially enjoyed the story of Matangi leaving his children behind, who are now embodied as raupō.

The significance of raupō in oral history and its presence in the environmental history of the lake, as identified through analysis of the sediment core, provides a unique opportunity to explore the weaving of knowledge through its material, spiritual and cultural uses.
