Wig Wednesday & Bake Sale
Yesterday, our Student Executive proudly supported Wig Wednesday, helping to raise both money and awareness for the Child Cancer Foundation.
Our ākonga came to school in wacky wigs, colourful hairdos and creative hairstyles. With a gold coin donation, everyone had the opportunity to get involved and show their support for children and families affected by cancer.
Alongside Wig Wednesday, Emma and her whānau organised a bake sale. Our Toetoe Community donated a delicious selection of home-baked treats for ākonga to purchase. The bake sale was a huge hit, with lots of smiling faces enjoying the tasty treats, and all proceeds going towards the Child Cancer Foundation.
It was wonderful to see our ākonga, whānau, staff and wider community come together to support such an important cause.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated, baked, dressed up, purchased treats, and helped make the day such a success. Your generosity and support will make a real difference to children and families facing childhood cancer. 💛

Cultural Day – Friday 4th September 🌏🌺
Last Friday, West Melton School celebrated the wonderful diversity of cultures that make up our school community! It was a fantastic opportunity for our ākonga to share, learn and celebrate what makes each of our cultures special.
Ākonga were invited to wear clothing that represented their culture. We loved hearing the stories and meaning behind what they had chosen. ❤️
We also came together for a shared Cultural Day breakfast in our whānau groups. A huge thank you to all of the amazing whānau who joined us and contributed to making the morning so special. It was fantastic to see tables filled with delicious food from so many different cultures and traditions. 🥐🥝🍳🌍
A huge ngā mihi to everyone who helped make our Cultural Day such a memorable celebration. We are incredibly lucky to have such a supportive school community! 🌏💛

🏆 More Success for Finn! 🏆

On Sunday, Finn competed in the Canterbury Trampoline Championships, representing West Melton Gymnastics Club.

Sunday’s competition was the final in a series of four, and Finn had a fantastic competition, performing brilliantly and taking out 1st place in both the Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline competitions on the day! 🥇🥇

Finn also won the Canterbury Championship title for the series in both disciplines and came away with four medals🥇🥇🥇🥇😄

What an outstanding achievement, Finn! We’re incredibly proud of you and all the hard work you’ve put in. ⭐

🚀 Calling all future leaders! 🚀

Selwyn Sports Trust is excited to launch our first-ever holiday programme, Young Leaders Day 2026 🙌

A day designed for Year 5 & 6 tamariki to discover their strengths, build confidence, and explore what leadership really means.

Through sport, teamwork and fun challenges, participants will develop skills in communication, resilience, problem-solving and self-belief, while learning through the Te Whare Mauri Ora framework and exploring how wellbeing, connection and identity shape great leaders.

Because leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room. It’s about understanding yourself, supporting others, and making a positive impact 💚

🌱 Give your child the opportunity to grow in confidence, discover their leadership style, and take away skills they can use every day.

Celebration of Learning – Thursday 27 August 2026
Yesterday’s Celebration of Learning began with the beautiful waiata Ko Te Whirika.
Our Ambassadors reminded us of our school values, with Determination being our focus for Term 3.
The Student Executive shared upcoming events, including Wig Wednesday and the Bake Sale on 9 September in support of the Child Cancer Foundation, as well as our Teddy Bear Naming Competition, with voting opening Monday.

We also celebrated our Cantamath teams and enjoyed the winning performance from our Jump Jam team, who were presented with their certificates by Miss Duffield and Miss O’Brien.

Well done to Mānuka, winners of this week’s Enviro Award, while Langdale are ahead of Trickett in the Whānau Points.
To finish, Mr Maddren presented our Values Certificates. These ākonga will enjoy pizza with Mrs Riley next week.
