Growing caring, creative and curious learners. High quality early childhood education. Mount Cook Growing caring, curious and creative learners.
At Mount Cook Preschool, we understand the importance of the early years in shaping children’s sense of identity, their attitudes toward learning and their ability to form positive relationships. Working closely with parents and whānau, we develop trusting relationships with each child and provide a calm, safe and stimulating environment for them to flourish in. We develop warm, responsive relatio
nships with each child, and work closely with parents and whānau to foster the happiness and wellbeing of the whole community. Because every child is different, we take time to learn about the strengths, interests, experiences and needs of each, individualising our interactions and programme as necessary. We are committed to providing equitable learning opportunities for every child and for Māori children to succeed as Māori, so we honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi by reflecting the Māori language, culture and identity. We believe that children learn with all their senses and that play is the best way for young children to learn. Being immersed in play fosters many skills necessary for active participation in society, including communication, cooperation, creativity, persistence, and resilience. Our programme is underpinned by Te Whāriki - the early childhood curriculum, and includes rich and meaningful opportunities for the children to grow as confident and competent learners. We guide children’s developing social and emotional competence patiently and positively, modelling and encouraging the use of proactive and pro-social skills. Papatūānuku/Earth Mother provides us with rhythms and materials that inspire wonder and curiosity, thinking and observation skills, calmness and connection. We learn from nature and treat the Earth and all living things with care. We are a not-for profit community based centre with a parent and community governance committee.
