READING TIP OF THE WEEK !

Read the book, then watch the movie.

Pick a classic that’s been turned into a movie—THE BFG; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory—and read it together, a few chapters at a time.

When you’re finished, host a family movie night to watch the film version. This is a great way to hook your reader into the novel, helps them understand the descriptive content in the novel and allows you to talk about characters and why they might act a certain way. Use this as a springboard in helping them to explore different endings .

Reading is amazing and one of the most essential skills in our highly literate world.

Did you know that Sunday 23rd May is World Turtle Day?

Here in New Zealand we are the home to five turtle species. Green and leatherback turtles are our most common species. Leatherbacks are widely spread around New Zealand and have been recorded as far south as Fiordland. Turtles have been found and tracked in waters around North Cape and the eastern coast of Northland are the favoured foraging grounds.

Turtles are so amazing as they are known to have been in our world for 200 million years and can live to be up to 250 years old. Let's celebrate the turtle this Sunday by reducing our plastic usage so we can keep these beautiful creatures in our world.

You can celebrate the day by sharing how amazing turtles are with your kids, read them a story about turtles or find out amazing facts about them !

We want to our kids reading, but so many reluctant readers feel under increasing pressure to do so, and it can overshadow the joy of this wonderful shared activity, and cause anxiety that forms a barrier to decoding words and using reading strategies.

Audiobooks not only take off the pressure but it increases word exposure, increasing vocabulary levels, strengthens aural comprehension levels and increases reading fluency!

So embrace audiobooks ! They aid and support reading by increasing confidence, fluency and competency !

If in doubt go to your local library, pick up a favourite book and see if they have an audiobook to accompany it.

In no time you will see your reluctant reader bloom into an active one !
