Featuring classes, workshops and events on Contact Improvisation in Wellington NZ and internationally

Contact improvisations are spontaneous physical dialogues that range from stillness to highly energetic exchanges. Alertness is developed in order to work in an energetic state of physical disorientation, trusting in one's basic survival instincts. It is a free play with balance, self-correcting the wrong moves and reinforcing the right ones, bringing forth a physical/emotional truth about a share

Wellington friends and movers!
Ever been interested in trying Contact Improvisation but don’t know where to start?
Already love Contact Improvisation and craving an opportunity to refresh your core skills?
Love connecting and enjoying moving with friendly, respectful people?

LOOK NO FURTHER!

I’m running a 4 week course in the foundations of Contact Improvisation!
you will learn (or go over) basic skills and principles of Contact Improvisation in a safe, respectful and fun environment.

Every Friday in September 6:30 - 8:30 at Newtown Community Center.

In each session we will learn a few core skills and explore them together in a structured session. You'll be able to begin to feel the joy of improvising in response to another body by the end of the first session

Over the 4 weeks I’ll guide us through a step by step process and by the end you will be confident to rock up to any Contact Improvisation ‘Free Jam’ and easily join in to play, move, explore and connect.

(currently great Jams happening weekly in Wellington on a Wednesday)

WARNING: You might be hooked!
The pure delight of exploring how two bodies can move in relation to each other can fill you with the most profound sense of peaceful curiosity.

I did contact Improvisation for the first time over 20 years ago and have connected with people in all kinds of contexts all around the world dancing together since then. It has truly been one of the most nourishing, connecting and insightful practices of my life.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Especially if you’re interested but not sure it's right for you! I love talking all things Contact Improv - it's endlessly fascinating to me so no question is too small.

"The strength of Contact Improvisation resides within this spontaneous, immediate sharing, where the instant becomes precious through the quality of the exchange. Lying on the floor, as a support for partners, a micro-movement is an imbalance that bears the next movement, and the amplitude of the balanced body's movement starts from this anchor pointed on its knife, which in the previous instant caused the small dance. It is very interesting to explore the intimacy of this precise point on another’s body that, somewhere, has this anchor point as a conclusion of the previous movement. If trust is not established by an adequate warm-up, the dancers have no chance of exploring this momentum, which becomes a spontaneous motion dialog whose vocabulary is based upon the alphabet of the anchor points."
