An important update from Te Puna Reo o Ngā Kakano

We urgently need to find a new location for our Puna Reo as our current building at 238 Thorndon Quay requires earthquake strengthening by June 2024.

We have 38 mokopuna and whānau and 12 kaimahi with us currently. There have been hundreds who have been with Puna before and there will be more to come. We all chose Puna because we believe in raising our tamariki with te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and a strong sense of cultural identity. We know our kaupapa is vital to growing happy, healthy tamariki who are the future leaders of Aotearoa.

So, we are calling on our community to help us! If you can support in any way, big or small, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Erina Kauika at [email protected]

E te whānau, kia ora!

And just like that we find ourselves in April already!

This Friday 10am to 12pm matua Waylon will be at Puna for our usual working bee.

This includes polyurethaning chairs and tables, cleaning walls, painting, gardening and odd jobs like replacing the shade sail or drilling and hammering things.

It is Good Friday and most of you will be away or busy but if you have time and some pukenga let matua Waylon know by sending us a message.

There will be great background music, kai and sweat.

Nau mai!

Episode iwa - The one where we give thanks. To Reece and Toni for their long commitment to Puna as kaitiaki but also for their support and guidance to the board to help achieve what we have. To our whānau past and current, for stepping up and into Puna. Our kaiako for their love & care of our tamariki, particularly Emma and Shinead for the load you have carried – we see and appreciate you. To our tamariki – it is for you always.

Episode waru - The building where we live. Conversations continue about our current location and the earthquake strengthening planned. Originally this was due to occur in Dec and over the summer break, however it has been confirmed that his work will not be going ahead this summer. The Board is advocating this takes place next Dec/Jan 2024-25. And while we are continuing to explore other potential options for the longer-term future of Puna, we do intend to stay at the current location for 2024.

Episode ono – We did some other stuff too. Did our first fundraising hāngi, had a couple of whānau working bees, on-boarded new whānau, repainted in the carpark, replanted te mara. Blessed our whare, shared kai for Matariki. Lots done, more to do.
