Ngā Manu Tioriori Shines at The Big Sing
On Wednesday night, our Onslow all-comers choir, Ngā Manu Tioriori, took the stage at the annual Big Sing choral competition at Wellington's MFC. It was a huge day of music, with the group performing in both the daytime sessions and the evening gala.
The choir sounded fantastic delivering a diverse lineup, including The Wellerman, Tyger, and California Dreamin'. A massive thank you to our Musical Director Olivia Fraser-Morris, pianist Jocelyn Oldcorn and Year 11's Temple Calinawan on drums and Richard Williams on Bass guitar.
Our students absolutely loved the experience and the sense of community.
Saydie says: "I've participated in The Big Sing at both schools I've been at and it never fails to be an absolute highlight of my year!! There's just this awesome sense of community you get through singing, and singing at Onslow has been no different, I've made lots of new friends actually! I couldn't recommend joining a choir enough, I'm not an amazing singer but still, there's endless amounts of joy and learning!"
Daniel adds: "We had the chance to showcase our talent in Wellington's Big Sing. Truly an event that was simultaneously captivating and electrifying to all."
Ka rawe, Ngā Manu Tioriori! We are incredibly proud of your hard work and beautiful harmonies.

Last Thursday, our Year 11 Geographers explored the Waiwhetū Stream as part of their 'Understand an Environment Using Data' theme.
Students collected macroinvertebrates, measured velocity, temperature, and conductivity, while assessing the characteristics of four sites from the awa's source in Naenae to its mouth in Seaview.
Students explored the impact of volunteer actions to strengthen the mauri of this fragile waterway, once considered New Zealand's most polluted river.

A huge congratulations to Lucy Williams (Yr 9) and everyone who represented Onslow College at the Ngā Manu Kōrero Regional Speech competition on Wednesday.
Held at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti (Kāpiti College), the event brought together secondary schools from across the region, from Seatoun to Ōtaki. Lucy did an outstanding job representing our school and stood proud competing in the Rāwhiti Ihaka (Junior Reo Māori) section.
While we did not take home any awards this year, it was a special occasion as we returned the Korimako (Senior English) trophy. Onslow College has proudly held this trophy for the last three years, following the previous successes of Billy Paratene (Class of 2024) and Scott Picard (Yr 12).
A massive thank you to Te Whānau o Tarikākā, our Kapa Haka students, and the staff who travelled to support Lucy and represent our school community. We are incredibly proud of you all.

More information about the SSEP Programme!
Onslow was the first school in Wellington to incorporate the SSEP Programme into our Year 9 & 10 Maths and Science learning.
As well as giving our students a clearer picture of how classroom learning connects to real-world careers.
Watch Jono Wyeth and our teachers Mark Patchett, and Jayshree Moodley talk about the Programme at Onslow. Thanks Smart Waikato 👍

Why are we learning this? 🤔
Our Year 10 Science students found out firsthand this week. As part of the SSEP (Secondary School Employer Partnerships) Programme, they visited the team at to see their Human Physiology topic come to life.
This awesome trip followed a visit from SWET staff (shout-out to Tash!) to Onslow College, where they showed our students exactly how their business connects to the school curriculum. After seeing it in action, our students now have a clear picture of how classroom learning connects to real-world careers. 🚀
A massive thank you to for your incredible generosity, opening your doors, and taking the time to inspire our students. We are so lucky to have such a supportive local community! 🙌👌👏
