Our kindergarten was featured in a Newsroom story about the latest ECE licensing changes. As a small Steiner special‑character kindergarten, it’s so important that services like ours are represented in national conversations — especially when new regulations impact us in big ways.
We’re proud to stand up for small, community‑based ECE and highlight the mahi our team does every day to meet high standards while keeping our unique philosophy alive.

Poipoia te kākano kia puawai - nurture the seed and it will blossom
Over the past few weeks our tamariki have been captivated by a beautiful transformation unfolding right here at kindergarten. From caterpillars, to shimmering still chrysalises and finally to butterflies taking their first flight - our children have watched the full cycle of growth with awe and delight.
These moments are at the heart of Steiner early childhood education. When children show down, observe, and care for living things, they begin to understand their own place in the world. They learn patience, gentleness, wonder - and they blossom.
At our kindergarten, we see this same beautiful growth in every child who walks through our doors. Our kaiako feel privileged to nurture their journey each day.
We currently have a few spaces available for new families who are looking for a warm, nature-rich, play-based kindergarten. If you’re curious about what makes our community special, we’d love to kōrero.
Give us a call on 04 499 7394 or send us a message - come and see your child flourish with us.

A recent RNZ article exploring the pros and cons of delaying school entry has really got families talking. It's sparked some great conversations about what our children truly need at 4, 5 years and beyond - and how different environments support their confidence, wellbeing and readiness in different ways.
At Wellington City Rudolf Steiner Kindergarten we see how powerful it is when older tamariki stay a little longer in a play-based, relationship-rich environment. Children over 4 often flourish as leaders, deep thinkers and creators when they're given time space and trust to grow at their own pace.
In Steiner kindergartens, the philosophy centers on fostering a sense of community and mentorship among children of different ages. Older children naturally assist younger ones, guided by the educators who create an environment that encourages imitation and empathy. This dynamic helps the older children develop leadership skills and a sense of responsibility, while the younger children benefit from the guidance and nurturing of their older peers.
By helping and guiding younger children, older children develop empathy, patience, and a sense of responsibility towards others, crucial for social and emotional development.
So we encourage uptake of older kids (4+) at our kindergarten 😊
If you're wondering whether your child might benefit from more time in early childhood education, or if you're considering a change, we'd love to kōrero.
Delaying school: is redshirting best for your child?
Redshirting is a topic on social media, where some parents say delaying the start of school can set their child up for success.

🌷 Spring’s Promise 🌷
The weather may still have a touch of winter’s chill, but signs of Spring are all around us. Our beautiful tulips have come to bloom — a joyful reminder that warmth and colour always return.
Here is a little spring verse we share with our tamariki, capturing the wonder and promise of this season of growth:
A little bulb for me to sow,
A little earth to make it grow,
A little hole, a little pat,
A little wish & that is that,
A little sun, a little shower,
& in a while, a little flower. 🌦️🌸

✨ A Fifth Birthday at Wellington Rudolf Steiner Kindergarten ✨
At our kindergarten, a child’s fifth birthday is a treasured milestone. It is a moment we celebrate with reverence, joy, and warmth – a celebration that honours not just the passing of time, but the unfolding of each child’s individuality. 🌿
In Steiner education, birthdays are more than just a party. They are woven into the rhythm of the kindergarten year, with song, story, and ritual that give the child a sense of belonging, significance, and wonder. These gentle celebrations help children feel deeply seen and valued, while also nurturing the social fabric of the group.
Marking a fifth birthday is especially meaningful, as the child stands at the threshold of new growth and readiness for the next stage of learning. Through these traditions, we create memories that live in the hearts of children, building a foundation of trust, rhythm, and inner strength.
It is in moments like these that the uniqueness of a Steiner kindergarten shines — a place where children are held in love, surrounded by beauty, and invited to grow at their own pace. ✨

This week’s highlight was our much-anticipated visit to the Fire Station! Our children had an exciting time watching the firefighter get dressed in his gear and listening as he explained how his radio works inside his oxygen mask - so he can talk/communicate with his team. The children were thrilled to give him a big high five and proudly received stickers before heading back.
Unfortunately, the firefighters were called out to a real emergency, so our visit was cut short. But this has only made us more excited to return again soon – next time we hope to have our turn sitting inside the fire engine and even try out the hose!
Thank you to our local Fire Station for making the experience so memorable for our tamariki.

🐑✨ Guess who came to play? Jasper the lamb! 🍼💛
He bounced, he nibbled, he wore a nappy (yes, really!) and our tamariki absolutely loved every cheeky moment.
At Wellington Steiner Kindergarten, magical encounters with animals and nature are just part of our everyday rhythm, sparking joy, wonder, and connection. 🌿✨
