When learning Chinese, the word 不要 (bú yào) can be confusing! It actually has two main meanings, and understanding them will make a big difference.

Confused about
1) "不要" (búyào)
2) "不"+ verb" (bú + verb)
3) "不要"+ verb (búyào + verb)?
You're not alone!

Today, I've compiled sentences from some of my favorite anime to help clarify how these are used.

"不要" (búyào) or "不要 + verb" (búyào + verb) indicates a command or prohibition – telling someone NOT to do something. Think of it like "Don't want to do it!" or "Don't do sth." in English.

Yesterday at the Porirua Community Craft Market, I spent the day facing a Japanese sushi stand and couldn’t resist grabbing sushi whenever I got hungry. I bought it so often that the staff started to remember me! Inspired, I sketched her in action and gifted her the drawing.

At my stall, you’ll find not only drawing portraits, but also a variety of crochet goods! I have crochet bouquets of carnations, roses, tulips, and even little cacti—perfect as long-lasting decor.
