Bird on the street is that Titipounamu are on the top ten list of contenders for Te Manu Rongonui o Te Tau (Bird of the Year)!
Voting closes on Sunday 31 October so there's still plenty of time to bump them up to that number one spot.
If you need some convincing, here are some facts about the Titipounamu:
1️⃣ Māori refer to these little birds as messengers to the gods, specifically as one of the messengers of Tāne, god of the forest.
2️⃣ They are the smallest endemic birds and also lay the smallest eggs. They weigh around 6g and are similar in size to a golf ball!
3️⃣ They are one of two remaining wren species in New Zealand, making them very unique.

For the next 2 weeks (as part of our ‘Community’ programme), Te Ngahere will be supporting Bird of the Year, Te Manu Rongonui o te Tau!
Each day we will be learning about some of our native birds, and why it is important for us to protect them and support conservation efforts.
Today we went on to the website and listened to some of the bird calls, and found out which manu (birds) were the most in danger. Check out our display wall when you come in next! 🌿🍃🪵
If your family has a bird that you are supporting for Bird of the Year, make sure you let us know!
It's that time again! Time for Te Manu Rongonui o te Tau !
Just visit www.birdoftheyear.org.nz to read about our amazing native manu and rank your top five favourites. Which incredible native species will get your vote this year?
Bird of the Year is a fun celebration of our native taonga, but there’s a serious side. About 80% of our native bird species are threatened or at risk of extinction. They face threats from climate change, habitat destruction, and introduced pests.
But the good news is, when we care for our native species, we also care for each other! When our rivers, forests, and oceans are healthy, our climate, wildlife, and communities are better off too!
