Playcentres are based on child-led play and involve families / whanau learning and growing together in a supportive community environment. Playcentre parents access high-quality training in many aspects of early childhood education and development, and each centre is staffed and run by parent volunteers. Big aroha and awhi to everyone at Playcentre (including us!) who is going through this financial reckoning at the moment. We love our session facilitators and centre advisor and we want to keep them. The model we have isn’t working, the qualifications have been too hard for our parents to access and that means the funding available from MoE is out of reach. Realistically, our parents don’t have the spoons to be running a full centre. We need administrative support and we want educational support. The Playcentre education is so good and improves family dynamics immeasurably. But we are juggling life - households working part time, trying to pay bills, trying to parent, looking after our parents and so on. There needs to be balance. We stand with Playcentre Aotearoa in trying to figure out a way forward because Playcentre is such an amazing community asset. It’s so needed and loved. The community connections formed and predominately women who have found their turangawaewae through Playcentre is an amazing part of Aotearoa. We ask you to raise this with political parties this election year and put Playcentre on the political agenda for supporting whānau and delivering great value. Our tamariki need us. Financial struggles push Playcentre to propose overhaul Playcentre - which is a model of early childhood education where volunteer parents run centres - is proposing to remove roles adding up to 120 full time equivalent employees.
