Discovery Nursery & Cottage

Cottage tamariki have been enjoying exploring different animals through sensory play.

They investigated sea animals in slime and farm animals in paint. This supports tamariki in developing their language skills, imaginative thinking and social skills as well as helping them to understand the world around them.

This week, we extended our learning by exploring the life cycle of a bird. Through hands-on experiences and meaningful discussions, children discovered how a bird grows from an egg into an adult, fostering curiosity, observation skills and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Tamariki enjoyed our visit to Naenae Neighbourhood Hub.

The focus was on bubbles where tamariki listened to stories all about bubbles, created their own bubble wands and had fun blowing bubbles. This supported their literacy skills and encouraged curiosity and fine motor skills.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our connection with our local community.

This morning, our tamariki explored the magic of light and shadow through play. As they observed, chased and experimented with their own shadows, the developed curiosity, problem - solving skills, and understanding of cause and effect.

These meaningful outdoor experiences encourage scientific thinking, creativity and physical movement while fostering wonders about the natural world.

Our tamariki are enjoying learning Mandarin every Friday through a fun, interactive session with our kaiako Karry that builds language skills and cultural awareness.

Our tamariki's curiosity about birds sparked a wonderful learning journey!

We noticed their growing interest,listened carefully to their ideas, and documented their voices as they shared what birds mean to them.

Through intentional, child led experiences, we provided provocative invitations to explore, create and imagine. From designing their own unique birds to building birdhouses for our little feathered friends, our tamariki expressed their creativity, strengthened their thinking , and deepened their connection with the natural world.

When we follow children's interests, learning becomes meaningful, joyful and full of wonder.
