What’s missing isn’t subject matter. It’s interpretation. “Everything’s already been photographed” is a common conclusion in photography, and it’s usually aimed at the wrong problem. Cities, faces, protests, intimacy, yes, all extensively documented. But photography has never advanced by discovering new subjects. It advances through how a person stands in relation to what they’re looking at. Interpretation lives in posture, distance, patience, and restraint. In what you return to. In what you avoid. In how long you’re willing to stay when nothing announces itself as important. If the work feels repetitive, it’s rarely because the world has run out of material. It’s more often because intention hasn’t been examined closely enough.
