Tried a tip I was given a few years ago
'when you see masses of white spottys keep an eye out for JDs as they love to eat them'
Saw heaps chilling around the front of a rock and snuck around the back to find a JD just chilling so I happily shot it and I was only in 4m of water 🙌
Makara wasn't kind though with poor vis and more swell than the maps suggested which made getting in and out of the stream dodgy but we got there 🫣
A dive a few weeks back one early Sunday morning!
Conditions were meant to be mint but the ramp as empty when we got there but we are always up for a first light mission!
Quick boost around Red Rocks and nice easy diving with plenty of Crayfish in less than 5m of water but most were soft so they live another day!
An epic and easy dive for a good feed to share with whanau!

Epic mission and plenty of Kaimoana and plenty of rage at my dive buddy as I had a scrap with my Kingi!

Dive watch battery change!
My dive watch is my most important piece of 'unnecessary' equipment. I say 'unnecessary' as you could dive your whole life without one, but DONT.
I now hate diving without mine and I feel naked in the water without it. It is easily the best money I have spent on diving gear ($5-600). With that being said, I will happily change my own battery to save $130 but it does mean you forgo the warranty (keep that in mind).
My favourite thing I love about it is knowing how deep I am dropping so I can mentally prepare for that depth during my next breath up. Also letting me know my surface time I dont rush into my next drop and make sure I have had a 1:2 ratio of dive time:rest (also so I dont get in trouble from wifey when I know its time to get out I cant play the old 'didnt know').
The only think I dont like about it is how it tells me about my 30s breath hold! But with that being said, if you having an off day (fatigue, illness, lack of sleep from checking your alarm 10 times so you dont miss the early morning wake up) you can see that in your breath hold times and know when to call it or when its time to hit the shallows for some Paua or Koura.

Raw South Coast Kingfish GoPro action - The good, the bad and the ugly!
Comment below what you think was good, bad or ugly! I took many lessons from landing this fish but I was/am stoked either way!
I wanted to target Kingfish this dive so I found current and bait fish and was doing 10m + drops.. I saw one Kingi come into sight when doing this which kept me going a while. I turned on the GoPro and it boosted so I decided to shoot first next time. After a few more drifts I got over it and swam into the shallows. In 7m I saw a big rock in the middle of w**d covered in Kina so I bashed them up to see if they would bring in any nice Blue Cod as there were plenty of smaller models around. Within 2 minutes, two Kingfish swam in for a look at what all the commotion was about. Wanting to shoot it, I dropped 2m and plugged one. On the way up I turned on my GoPro. The rest is history!

Launched at Owhiro Bay and crusied around as im too precious to take my ute over the gate
After getting the first few I got lazy and choked but blessed!

A good feed on a Paua that is legal sideways 🤘
Wellingtons South Coast delivering the goods!
Winter diving was hard work in Wellys and the Butterfish were hiding every time we went out!
Still worth the mission, cold water and hazy 4-5m vis for some Paua and bugs!
Yarns as always so you might be able to learn a trick or two!

When you can't be bothered crumbing your fish (flour, egg, crumb) just drop it in some Coat 'n Cook.. fast, easy and delicious!
Even my 3 year old daughter can do it well with these Blue Cod fillets for tea 🙌
