Tēnā tineia atu te marama me ngā whetū
The passing of distinguished statesman and leader Sir Tāmati Muturangi Reedy marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Aotearoa’s history. Born in Ruatoria on the East Coast, Sir Tāmati dedicated his life to the advancement of Te Ao Māori, leaving behind a legacy of enduring significance.
A visionary leader, he served as Secretary of Māori Affairs in the 1980s and was widely respected as a foremost authority in Te Reo Māori and Māori culture. Together with his beloved late wife, Lady Tilly Reedy, he formed a formidable partnership grounded in service, intellect, and unwavering commitment to Māori aspirations.
Their collective work helped shape the future of Māori education and identity. Drawing on the wisdom and aspirations of kaumātua from throughout the country, they played a pivotal role in the creation of Te Whāriki, Aotearoa’s early childhood curriculum. This groundbreaking framework is celebrated nationally and internationally for honouring the uniqueness, mana, and potential of every mokopuna.
Sir Tāmati’s influence extended far beyond Aotearoa. As a Fulbright scholar, he studied at the University of Hawai‘i, where he contributed to the establishment of the first Pūnana Leo movement. He also served as an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama and later became the first Māori to be granted the title of Emeritus Professor at the University of Waikato.
A man of many talents, Sir Tāmati was also a keen sportsman. He played rugby for Hikurangi, the East Coast, and several provinces, and trialled for the Māori All Blacks. Alongside Lady Tilly, he was an enthusiastic tennis player and a passionate supporter of Māori tennis development.
The enduring impact of Sir Tāmati and Lady Tilly Reedy is felt deeply within Te Kōhanga Reo, Māori education, and across Aotearoa. Their contribution elevated the status of Māori and Indigenous knowledge both nationally and globally, gifting future generations a strong foundation in identity, language, and culture.
