Our networks, aka people we know (funny how we sometimes forget that bit), can be the most valuable connections during a job search. For lots of people the idea of networking is horrifying and feels awkward and hard.

Why? A variety of reasons the most common being embarrassment, insecurities, and not wanting to put someone out.

Whatever the reason, the truth is people love to help others. Even if it is only 5mins of their time, people will generally but happy to do what they can in support of you.

If you are one of those who is holding back sharing your job search with those you know here are some things to think about.

• Your elevator pitch – be clear on the opportunity you are looking for. Be as specific as you can. Have enough detail so people will know how they can help you. Being too vague leaves room for confusion and that wastes everyone’s time.

• One to one networking – respect their time by being clear about how they could help. Do you need a connection, advice, information or inspiration? Asking changes the conversation from being out of work sux to I know something/someone that could help.

• Saving that key, important connection for the perfect moment is like having a For Best outfit sitting in your closet. If you never wear it then it’s a For Nothing outfit and a waste of space. Make room for something else useful or better yet just wear it.

• Group networking – is about making connections. Go in being curious, discover interesting people and ask to connect outside of the event. Then follow up while the initial connection is warm.

Finally, tell EVERYONE you are on the hunt for your next role – you never know who may have the right opportunity for you. Networking is every situation from the weekend BBQ to a business event and everything in between.

Being the world’s best kept secret isn’t going to get you what you want - start talking.

I came across this little booklet in a drawer at the weekend. One of those drawers where you put things you want to keep but seldom look at. Some of the contents went in the bin, some in a box for charity, and others, like this little booklet, were pure gold.

This booklet was created as part of a team exercise I did back when I was managing a team. We each took the time to write something we appreciated about each of the other team members. They were all collated and put together in a little booklet just like this and shared with the person.

This is some of mine.

I'm sharing this because when I pulled it out and re-read it at the weekend I went right back to the first time I read these comments. Back to those feelings of being appreciated, of seeing the positiveness others saw and that inside voice of - hey maybe I do know what I'm doing.

I remember as a team of all sharing those similar positive feelings and even some being surprised at how others saw them and calling out things they hadn't thought of for themselves.

We don't do this sort of thing enough.

We don't stop to tell others how we appreciate them. And we certainly don't stop to tell ourselves how much we appreciate ourselves and recognise the good (and dare I say great) things we do.

It was a little moment of magic in my weekend to come across this all these years after it was created.

I'm putting a challenge out there to create one for yourself. Write down things YOU appreciate about YOU. Read it now and recognise the greatness of being you today. Then put it away to discover at a later date. Maybe it will show up at a time when you need reminding to appreciate yourself a little more.

Or do it in your team and see how to appreciate yourself through the eyes of others.

Celebrating all the women who have helped, inspired, encouraged, pushed boundaries ahead of me and supported me to do the same.

Today I celebrate all women and recognise how far we have come.

Sometimes when pushing for change it can feel like you aren't getting anywhere. But in reflecting we can see the strides we have made. I see and hear it in the young women around me where their attitudes to things I had dreamed of are ones of confidence and truth.

Their confidence builds my confidence that the world continues to move forward to a better fairer place - even if it does feel slow and even backward at times.

Change never stops and neither should it. Our cries for change were different from our mother's and our daughter's cries will be different from ours. That is how it goes and that is how we see our progress.
