What a fabulous night at MATHEX 2026! It was like the Olympic Games for mathematicians — fast-paced, competitive and full of excitement!

Our Year 7 and Year 8 teams had an absolute ball, tackling a series of tricky questions for the full 30 minutes and earning points along the way. The competition was tight, with schools racing to solve each question and their runners sprinting to the markers to submit their answers!

The stadium was buzzing with family and friends cheering on the students, while the incredibly enthusiastic compere had the crowd well and truly fired up.

With all that noise and excitement, it was a wonder anyone could concentrate on the maths!

Well done to all our students for giving it their all and representing us so brilliantly!

Off to Nationals!

A huge congratulations to our Mahurangi College students who represented us at the Police Blue Light competition last week.

The team had a fantastic day taking on a range of challenges, working together and representing Mahurangi brilliantly. Even better — they beat Whangaparāoa and have now qualified for the Nationals in Papakura this November!

We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school and threw themselves into every challenge.

A massive thank you to Senior Constable Katie Hawkins and NZ Police for giving our students this fantastic opportunity and supporting them throughout the day.

Well done, team — Nationals here we come!

The Level 1 Geography classes enjoyed an exciting three-day field trip to Rotorua, gaining first-hand experience of what it is like to live in one of the world’s most significant geothermal environments.

On the first day, students travelled by gondola to the summit of Mt. Ngongotahā. From there, they explored how the Rotorua caldera was formed while enjoying spectacular views across the city and lake. Once we were settled into our accommodation, the annual Geography Mahu Taskmaster concluded the day with a series of team challenges led by Mr Gipps and Mr Matshobongswana.

Day two focused on the interaction, impacts, and management of geothermal surface features. The morning began at Sulphur Point with a teacher-led tour exploring the benefits and risks of geothermal activity, including the dangers of exposure to hydrogen sulphide. Students then visited Te Puia, where they learned about the cultural importance of geothermal activity to the local Te Arawa people.

In the afternoon, students explored Kuirau Park through an interactive challenge, competing to complete a series of geothermal-themed activities. Congratulations to our winners— Team Isla O’Brien! The visit provided an opportunity to closely examine a range of geothermal features and consider their environmental and social impacts. The day concluded with an unforgettable experience in the Redwood Forest, including a spectacular 40-metre-high illuminated treetop walk.

Through these activities and field-based learning experiences, students developed a deeper understanding of the opportunities, challenges, and careful management required when living in a geothermal environment. The knowledge and skills gained throughout the trip will be invaluable as students prepare for their end-of-year examinations.

Last week we held another very successful session with our Year 13 students who have applied to university for next year.

Students had the opportunity to sit down with university Liaison Officers to discuss and select their first-year papers, as well as ask questions about accommodation, scholarships and all things university!

These sessions are always a fantastic way to help our students feel informed, excited and motivated as they head into the final stretch of the school year. It’s wonderful to see them starting to look ahead and prepare for what comes next.

The next chapter is almost upon them!

This past weekend saw 162 dancers across all year levels performing at the annual Dance Showcase. All three shows were sold out to full capacity and beyond, and it was great to see such support and encouragement of our dancers from the audience and from the wings. Dances were performed by year 10-13 dance classes as well as our extracurricular groups: Eclipse, Impulse and Momentum. A massive thank you to our amazing team of student choreographers who help lead these groups!
