Our Kindergarten is a place where young children and their families can be involved, have fun and make memories. Waiuku Kindergarten is centrally located in a small township with a diverse ethnic population that supports a large surrounding rural area. Ongoing subdivision is increasing the town’s population, while enabling it to retain its township characteristics. The kindergarten contributes to

10 local schools in the town and outlying rural areas. Waiuku kindergarten, established in 1960, provides a very well resourced and aesthetically pleasing learning environment. It is spacious inside and out, with a good indoor/outdoor flow. The outdoor area provides a large amount of recently upgraded equipment to maximise opportunities for active movement.

A few weeks ago, there was a short time when our playground was unusually quiet, even silent. That was when the children took part in the NZ garden bird survey. They crept around the space, listening and looking for different birds, then marked them off on their charts. In our big, tree filled garden we identified a number of birds including piwakawaka, myna, thrush, silvereye, gulls, many sparrows and even a pair of doves.

On Thursday last week we celebrated Matariki with a Whanau Breakfast. Tamariki decided on the menu, whanau contributed ingredients and kaiako cooked for everyone! Matariki brings us together, and reminds us how important manaakitanga and whanaungatanga is, and what better way to gather than a breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns, spaghetti, toast, pancakes, cereal and milo on a cold winter morning? We said Ka kite anō to three children heading off to primary school this week. As children approach turning five there is lots of discussion about the Korowai Ceremony , they really look forward to it. Re-enacting the ritual has even become part of their dramatic play; wearing a cloak, looking at the portfolio, singing our love songs and putting their aroha into taonga for the special person. 🩷❤️🩷❤️
