โœจ A peaceful place to slow down, reconnect, and simply be. ๐ŸŒฟ About EquiHaven

Welcome to EquiHaven โ€“ Where Horses Help People Grow. Nestled in the peaceful countryside near Waiinu Beach in the Whanganui region, EquiHaven was created from a simple belief: that horses have an incredible ability to help people slow down, reconnect, and find calm. I'm

Kaz, the founder of EquiHaven, and horses have always held a special place in my life. Over the years, I've experienced first-hand the comfort, peace, and quiet strength they can offer simply by being present. That experience inspired me to create a space where others could discover the same sense of connection and wellbeing. At EquiHaven, our Horse Connection & Wellbeing sessions provide a welcoming, non-judgemental environment where people can step away from the demands of everyday life and spend meaningful time with our gentle herd. Through quiet interaction, grooming, mindfulness, and simply being present, our horses encourage us to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves and nature. Every horse at EquiHaven has their own unique personality and story. Whether it's Lucy's gentle nature, Amora's loving kisses, LB's cheeky curiosity, or Milo's quiet confidence, each member of the herd brings something special to the experience. Together, they create a space where trust grows, confidence builds, and meaningful connections are made. There is no pressure, no expectations, and no riding requiredโ€”just an opportunity to experience the quiet wisdom of horses in a peaceful rural setting. Whether you're looking for a moment of calm, time to reconnect with yourself, or simply the joy of being around horses, you'll always be welcomed with kindness, understanding, and a friendly nicker from one of our herd. Thank you for visiting EquiHaven and for supporting this small, heart-led business. I look forward to welcoming you to our little corner of the countryside and introducing you to our remarkable herd.

*"Sometimes the smallest hearts carry the greatest courage."*

And now we've reached the **seventh and final member of the EquiHaven Herd**...

Meet **Bubbles**. ๐Ÿซง๐Ÿค

At just **7 years old**, Bubbles is the smallest member of our herd.

But don't let her size fool you...

She has one of the **biggest personalities** around here! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Bubbles is a miniature pony who has previously been a **children's lead pony and riding pony**, and she is absolutely wonderful with kids.

She's sweet, gentle and full of character.

She loves having her **neck scratched**, adores carrots ๐Ÿฅ•, and will always come running when I call her name.

She also has a very important rule about food:

**Everyone else's dinner is better than hers.**

It doesn't matter what she's eating.

If another horse has something...

Bubbles wants it.

๐Ÿ˜‚

But underneath that cheeky personality is a little pony who has had to learn that people can be trusted.

When Bubbles first came to me, catching her wasn't easy.

I used to have to **chase her around the paddock** just to try to catch her.

She was particularly cautious around men, and it was clear that she carried some fear from her past.

She also had a very strong reaction to having a bit put into her mouth.

She would panic and try to rear, so rather than forcing her to accept something that clearly frightened her, I changed the way I approached the problem.

I bought her a **bitless bridle**.

And what happened next was incredible.

The frightened pony began to relax.

The panic disappeared.

And suddenly, Bubbles could simply enjoy being a pony again.

Today, the little pony who once ran away from me comes when I call her.

She is lovely to lead.

She loves being brushed.

And she will happily stand beside you soaking up those wonderful neck scratches she adores.

She's also super to ride and is particularly good with children.

Within the herd, Bubbles has learned another important survival skill...

**Get out of the way!** ๐Ÿ˜‚

Some of the bigger horses can be a little bossy with her, but Bubbles has perfected the art of whipping between them and scooting away before they can bother her.

She may be the smallest...

But she knows how to hold her own.

And perhaps that's what I love most about her.

Bubbles reminds us that sometimes what looks like stubbornness is actually fear.

Sometimes what looks like difficult behaviour is simply someone trying to protect themselves.

And sometimes the answer isn't to push harder...

**It's to listen, understand, and find another way.**

That's something Bubbles has taught me, and it's a lesson I carry with me every day at EquiHaven.

๐ŸŒฟ **Kindness changes things.**

And that's our **seven horses**.

Seven very different stories.

Seven very different personalities.

Seven gentle teachers.

Over the past few posts, you've met:

๐ŸคŽ **Lucy โ€“ The Gentle Soul**

๐Ÿด **Marshall โ€“ The Gentle Giant**

๐Ÿซง **Bubbles โ€“ The Little Survivor**

Each one arrived at EquiHaven with a different history.

Each one has taught me something different.

And together, they are the heart of what I'm building here.

But perhaps the most beautiful part is that their stories aren't finished.

They're still learning.

Still growing.

Still forming new friendships.

And now...

**they have the opportunity to help other people discover something about themselves too.**

This is only the beginning of the EquiHaven story.

Thank you for following along and getting to know my beautiful herd.

I'd love to know...

**After meeting all seven, which horse do you feel most drawn to?** ๐ŸคŽ

Tell me in the comments. I'd love to hear which one captured your heart.

๐ŸŒฑ **Meet Milo โ€“ The Quiet Courage** ๐Ÿด

*"Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is take one small step towards trust."*

Today we're introducing the **sixth member of the EquiHaven Herd**.

Meet **Milo**. ๐ŸคŽ

Milo is **7 years old**, and his story is one of patience, resilience and learning to trust.

Like Marshall, Milo came from the **same breeder** and began his life as a Thoroughbred racehorse.

And he was a very successful one.

Milo showed so much promise on the track that when he was diagnosed with **kissing spine**, his owners made the decision to have him undergo surgery so that he could continue racing.

He returned to racing after his operation, but eventually another problem brought his racing career to an end.

Milo began **bleeding from the nose**, and the decision was made to retire him.

His life then brought him to EquiHaven.

I have only had Milo since **December**, and from the very beginning it was clear that he was going to need something different from some of the other horses.

He was shy.

Very shy.

Milo didn't come running when I called.

He didn't want to be touched.

He would watch me from a distance, quietly trying to work out whether I could be trusted.

So I waited.

I didn't chase him.

I didn't force him.

I simply gave him time.

For months, I allowed him to decide when he was ready to come closer.

And then, one day...

He did.

He allowed me to walk up to him.

Then came the first pat.

And every tiny step after that felt like a little victory.

Today, Milo is still finding his feet, but something has changed.

He is beginning to trust me.

He's beginning to find his place within the herd.

And he has formed a particularly lovely friendship with **Marshall**.

You'll often find the two boys playing together or hanging out nearby.

Watching Milo slowly become more confident has been incredibly special.

Because Milo has reminded me of something I think we all need to remember sometimes...

**Healing cannot be rushed.**

At EquiHaven, we never ask a horseโ€”or a personโ€”to heal on someone else's timeline.

There is no deadline for trust.

No right speed for confidence.

And no such thing as a step that is too small to celebrate.

Sometimes progress is simply walking a little closer than you did yesterday.

Sometimes courage is allowing someone to touch your nose for the first time.

And sometimes...

**staying is the bravest thing you can do.**

๐ŸŒฑ **Milo | 7 years | Thoroughbred**

Milo is the **sixth story** in our Meet the Herd series.

Only **one horse remains**...

And she's a little different from all the others.

She's small.

She's cheeky.

She's got a HUGE personality.

And she has a story about fear, trust and discovering that sometimes changing the way we approach something can change everything.

๐Ÿด **Meet LB โ€“ Little Buddy, The Curious Companion** ๐ŸŒฟ

*"Some horses don't just become part of your life... they become part of your story."*

It's time to meet the **fifth member of the EquiHaven Herd**...

Meet **LB โ€“ Little Buddy**. ๐ŸคŽ

LB is **8 years old**, and he has already lived quite an interesting life.

Like several of our herd, LB began his life as a **Thoroughbred racehorse**.

He had a very successful racing career, but eventually the decision was made to retire him because, although he raced well, he simply wasn't making enough money to justify continuing.

And that's when LB's story took a new direction.

After leaving the racetrack, he went to a wonderful home where he became a **Pony Club horse**.

He discovered a love for jumping, competed successfully and even brought home some ribbons. ๐Ÿ…

Eventually, he moved to another home in Palmerston North.

Then circumstances changed.

His owner was given her dream horse and decided LB needed to find someone who would love him just as much.

That's where I came in.

I went to meet him...

And fell in love immediately. โค๏ธ

There was simply something about this cheeky, curious boy that captured me.

LB came home with me, and he and Amora became the **first two horses I ever owned**.

And from the beginning, they formed a very special friendship.

They share their feed.

They share their hay.

They rest together.

And if you find one of them, there's a very good chance the other isn't far away.

Their friendship is one of my favourite things to watch.

LB himself is an incredibly **curious and intelligent horse**.

He wants to know what's going on at all times.

Who's arrived?

What's happening over there?

Is someone doing something interesting?

Can I investigate?

And if there's something happening in the paddock...

**LB will probably be the first one to find out!** ๐Ÿ˜‚

He's also a dream to ride.

He's willing, responsive and simply lovely to spend time with, whether you're riding him or just standing beside him with a brush.

But perhaps what I love most about LB is his personality.

He's cheeky.

He's clever.

He's curious.

And he's absolutely convinced that he knows what's going on!

He has a way of making you smile without even trying.

LB has had several chapters in his lifeโ€”racehorse, Pony Club horse, jumper, family horse...

And now?

He's one of the horses helping shape **EquiHaven**.

His story reminds me that sometimes life doesn't follow the path we planned.

Sometimes we change direction.

Sometimes we start again.

And sometimes, the unexpected chapter turns out to be the best one.

LB is the **fifth story** in our Meet the Herd series.

We've now met five very different horses...

But there are still two stories left.

And I think the next one might be one of the most important.

๐ŸŒฑ **Next up: Milo โ€“ The Quiet Courage.**

Milo's story is about learning to trust, finding confidence and discovering that sometimes the smallest steps forward are the ones that matter most.

I can't wait for you to meet him. ๐ŸคŽ

๐ŸŒผ **Meet Daisy โ€“ The Comfort Keeper** ๐ŸŒผ

*"Sometimes the sweetest souls are the ones who simply make you feel safe."*

Today we're continuing our **Meet the Herd** series with the fourth member of the EquiHaven family.

Meet **Daisy**. ๐ŸคŽ

Daisy is **17 years old** and, although she is a Thoroughbred, she never raced.

Her bloodline was considered valuable, so instead of heading to the racetrack, Daisy was destined to become a **broodmare**.

During her life she successfully had **two foals**, before eventually beginning a completely different chapter.

Like Amora, Daisy came to me from the **same breeder**, and once again, I bought her **sight unseen**.

I was told she had spent some time as a children's pony.

When she arrived, it didn't take long for me to understand why.

Daisy is simply one of the **gentlest horses you could ever meet**.

She loves people.

She loves cuddles.

And if you are willing to stand beside her and give her some attention, she'll happily stay with you for as long as you like.

She is also lovely to ride, and has that wonderful quiet nature that makes you feel comfortable in her company.

But Daisy has something else that tells us a lot about her...

**She really doesn't like being away from her herd.**

If separated from the others, Daisy can become stressed and unsettled.

And I think there's something rather beautiful about that.

Daisy reminds us that even the gentlest and strongest among us still need connection.

We all need to know where our safe place is.

We all need peopleโ€”or in Daisy's case, horsesโ€”who make us feel that we belong.

And then there's another very special relationship in Daisy's life...

My little granddaughter **absolutely adores her**. โค๏ธ

We affectionately call her **Daisy Dukes**, because she's just the sweetest girl, and watching my granddaughter spend time with her is one of those simple moments that makes my heart very happy.

Daisy doesn't need to be the centre of attention.

She doesn't need to prove anything.

She simply stands quietly beside you and lets you be.

And perhaps that's exactly what makes her such a wonderful teacher.

Sometimes comfort isn't about saying the right thing.

Sometimes it's simply about **being there**.

๐ŸŒผ **Daisy | 17 years | Thoroughbred**

๐ŸŒผ Affectionately known as **Daisy Dukes**

Daisy is the fourth story in our **Meet the Herd** series.

Three stories have already been shared, and three very different horses have shown us that every journey has something to teach us.

But we're only halfway through...

๐ŸŒฟ **Next up: LB โ€“ Little Buddy, The Curious Companion.**

His story includes racing, Pony Club, jumping ribbons, a change of homes, and a friendship with Amora that is incredibly special.

I can't wait to introduce you to him. ๐Ÿดโค๏ธ

๐Ÿด **Meet Amora โ€“ The Heart Horse** โค๏ธ

*"Sometimes you think you're rescuing a horse... only to discover she was there to rescue you."*

Today it's time to introduce the **third member of the EquiHaven Herd**.

And this one is a little different.

Meet **Amora**. โค๏ธ

At **17.1 hands**, Amora is the biggest horse in the EquiHaven herd.

She's also the one who holds the biggest piece of my heart.

Amora is **7 years old** and, like Lucy and Marshall, she began her life as a Thoroughbred racehorse.

She only raced **five times** before it became clear that racing wasn't going to be her future. She was considered too slow to be successful, and her racing career came to an early end.

When I decided to bring Amora home, I bought her **sight unseen**.

I had never met her.

I didn't know what she looked like.

And I certainly wasn't prepared for the enormous horse that stepped off the truck when she arrived! ๐Ÿ˜‚

But Amora came into my life at a time when I needed her more than I knew.

I was at one of the lowest points in my life.

I had started attending horse connection sessions myself and was discovering how much simply being around horses could help me feel grounded and connected.

I decided to get Amora because I hoped that having a horse of my own might give me some **purpose** again.

I thought I was giving her a second chance.

I never imagined she would give me one too.

โค๏ธ

Amora has helped me through some incredibly difficult times.

She has been there through my struggles with depression and while I have worked through physical injuries.

She never needed me to explain how I was feeling.

She simply stood beside me.

Over time, something very special developed between us.

Amora calls out when she sees me.

She follows me when I call her.

And if I'm anywhere around the property, she somehow seems to know where I am.

That bond is difficult to explain unless you've experienced it yourself.

That's why I call her **my Heart Horse**.

And in many ways, she is the reason **EquiHaven exists**.

Today, Amora has a very different life from the one she once knew.

She's the queen of her herd, the first to come and say hello, and one of the sweetest horses you'll ever meet.

She absolutely **loves having her bum scratched** and will quite happily turn around and present it to anyone who has discovered her favourite spot! ๐Ÿ˜‚

She also loves giving kisses.

But perhaps the most beautiful thing about Amora is that she has taken something that helped me and now has the opportunity to share that same sense of connection with other people.

I can't promise that a horse can fix what's hurting.

I don't believe healing works that way.

But I do believe that sometimes a horse can give you a reason to get up, a reason to step outside, a quiet place to breathe, and a connection that asks nothing from you.

Amora gave me that.

And that's why she'll always be...

โค๏ธ **My Heart Horse.**

There are still **four stories** to come.

And each one is different.

๐ŸŒผ **Next up: Daisy โ€“ The Comfort Keeper.**

Her story begins with a life that was very different from Amora's... but somehow, she ended up becoming one of the sweetest souls in our herd.

*"Sometimes the biggest horses have the gentlest hearts."*

Today it's time to introduce the **second member of the EquiHaven Herd**...

Meet **Marshall**. ๐Ÿด

At **16.1 hands high**, Marshall is one of the biggest boys here at EquiHaven.

But don't let his size fool you.

This big boy is incredibly **quiet, gentle and affectionate**, and he absolutely loves attention.

Marshall is **7 years old** and, like Lucy, he has a history on the racetrack.

He was a **very successful racehorse** until an injury to his shoulder brought his racing career to an end.

His life could have taken many different directions after retirement, but today Marshall has found a very different purpose.

Instead of racing around a track, he spends his days wandering the paddocks, enjoying his herd and welcoming the people who come to spend time with him.

And if Marshall decides he likes you...

You'll know about it. โค๏ธ

He's often one of the **first horses to come looking for attention**, quietly making his way over to see what you're up to.

He loves being fussed over and has a particularly funny habit of **rubbing his face all over you**.

It's his way of saying hello.

Marshall is also wonderfully easy to lead, which is pretty impressive when you remember just how much horse is standing beside you!

There is, however, one thing Marshall feels very strongly about...

**His horse cover.** ๐Ÿ˜‚

He absolutely hates having it put on and will do his best to try to **bite it off**.

Even the gentle giants have their opinions!

But underneath the funny personality is a horse with a beautiful, trusting nature.

Standing beside Marshall is a wonderful reminder that confidence doesn't always have to be loud or bold.

Sometimes it's simply having the courage to stand beside something much bigger than yourself and realise...

**You're safe.**

๐ŸคŽ **Marshall | 7 years | 16.1 hands | Thoroughbred**

๐Ÿ‡ Successful former racehorse
๐ŸŒฟ Retired following a shoulder injury
๐ŸคŽ Gentle and affectionate
๐Ÿ‘‹ Loves attention

๐Ÿฅฐ Loves rubbing his face all over you
๐Ÿงฅ Definitely NOT a fan of his horse cover!

Marshall is the second chapter in our **Meet the Herd** series.

We've still got five very different stories to share...

And trust me, **some of their stories are not what you might expect.**

๐Ÿด **Next up... Amora โ€“ The Heart Horse.**

Her story is very different from the others.

And she's the horse who changed the direction of my life in ways I never could have imagined.

๐Ÿด **Meet Lucy โ€“ The Gentle Soul** ๐ŸŒฟ

*"Some horses don't need to do anything extraordinary. Their quiet presence is enough."*

Today I'm so happy to introduce you to the **first member of the EquiHaven Herd**...

Meet **Lucy**. ๐ŸคŽ

Lucy is **18 years old** and a Thoroughbred with quite a story behind those gentle eyes.

Before coming to EquiHaven, Lucy enjoyed an **extremely successful racing career**. When her racing days came to an end, she began an entirely different chapter of her life as a professional broodmare.

Lucy went on to have **nine foals**, spending many years caring for and raising her babies.

Today, her life looks very different.

There are no more racetracks to conquer and no more foals to raise.

Instead, Lucy gets to enjoy a quieter life surrounded by her herd, sunshine, paddocks... and plenty of people willing to give her the scratches she loves. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Lucy has one of the calmest and most loving natures in our herd.

She is incredibly gentle around people and has a quiet presence that seems to encourage you to slow down without even trying.

She absolutely **loves being brushed**, especially having her **neck and ears scratched**.

And if you happen to have a carrot?

Well... Lucy will be waiting very patiently for her share. ๐Ÿฅ•โค๏ธ

There is something incredibly special about standing beside a horse like Lucy.

You don't have to talk.

You don't have to explain anything.

You don't have to achieve anything.

You can simply stand beside her, brush her, scratch her favourite spots and enjoy being present in the moment.

And perhaps that's one of the greatest things Lucy has to offer.

**She reminds us that sometimes, it's okay to slow down.**

Lucy is one of the gentle souls of EquiHaven, and I'm so grateful that she gets to be part of this journey.

๐ŸŒฟ **Over the coming days, I'll be introducing each member of our herd and sharing the stories that brought them here.**

Each horse is different.

Each has their own history.

And each has something unique to share.

**I wonder which one you'll connect with most?** ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿด **Meet the Herd โ€“ Seven Horses. Seven Stories. Seven Gentle Teachers.** ๐ŸŒฟ

Before you meet the horses of **EquiHaven**, there is something I want you to know...

These aren't simply seven horses living in a paddock.

Each one has a story.

Some were successful racehorses who once chased finish lines.
Some were broodmares who spent their lives raising foals.
Some have changed homes and had to discover where they truly belonged.
Some have carried fear from experiences we may never fully understand.
And some have taught me more about healing than I ever thought a horse could.

Today, these seven horses have a very different purpose.

They don't need to race.
They don't need to compete.
They don't need to prove themselves.

They simply get to **be horses**.

And in doing so, they have become some of the gentlest teachers I have ever known.

Over the coming days, I'm going to introduce you to each member of the **EquiHaven Herd**โ€”one story at a time.

You'll meet the horse who helped me find hope when I needed it most.

You'll meet the gentle giant who loves nothing more than being close to people.

You'll meet the little pony who learned that she didn't have to be afraid anymore.

You'll meet the quiet soul who is slowly discovering that trust can be rebuilt.

And you'll meet the horses who remind me every day that healing doesn't happen on anyone else's timeline.

Each horse has something different to teach.

**Which one will you connect with?** ๐ŸคŽ

Follow along as we introduce the EquiHaven Herd.

Their stories might make you smile.

They might surprise you.

And perhaps, somewhere along the way, you might recognise a little piece of your own story in one of them.
