The Food Farm

The Food Farm We help people achieve their food-growing goals. We're an organic permaculture property in North Canterbury, NZ.

We grow our own food & teach others how to do it too! We have workshops, occasional open days and offer one to one consulting services for people wanting to grow their own food. Beyond this we're not open to the public and don't produce food for sale currently.

We have until midnight tonight (Wednesday) until our crowd-funding for free & low cost workshops ends! Can you help us get to our stretch goal of 120 donors? The amount doesn't matter - as the matching multiplies more, the more people we have. So close now! πŸ™πŸ½

We have the most amazing opportunity to offer no & low cost workshops for community organisations, schools and others who find cost a barrier. But we need your help! For the next 3 weeks we're part of this fundraising that sees everything we raise matched by the Ma Earth platform. It's called Quadratic funding. This means lots of small donations raise more than a few larger ones. Even $5 has an out-sized impact! Help us help more people learn to grow food, soil & biodiversity:

Join us next Sunday May 3rd here on The Food Farm for a composting & soil health workshop.

Soil is the answer to more problems than you think. This is the year to make sure you can grow lots of nutrient dense, good food. It's also a time to ground yourself and invest in your own sense of calm.

We'll look at everything from hot composting, bins, bokashi, biochar, cover crops, fermented plant teas, lacto-bacillus brews, leaf mould, cover crops and lots more!

Whatever your situation we'll find a soil fertility solution - so you don't have to resort to expensive, bought-in compost of dubious quality and excessive plastic (including microplastics).

You can make some clever moves right now that will help improve your food security over the coming months.

1. Spend some time this weekend finding your local food system. Food Secure North Canterbury have it all mapped out for you on their website https://foodsecurenc.org.nz/find-our-food-system/ . These short supply chains use less fossil fuels and are more resilient to global shocks.

2. Grow your own food. It's not too late to sow spinach, winter salads and Asian greens. They'll do even better if you sow them in a tunnel house or large pots in a warm spot. You can buy seedlings of brassicas and transplant them now for spring eating. Garlic and broad beans can also be sown over the coming months.

3. Cook more from scratch. Even if it's just a quick and easy dish, adding another as you're able. Fresh ingredients have less food miles and use less packaging. Plastic is made from petroleum.

4. This is the perfect time of year to make compost, gather ingredients like autumn leaves, ferment teas and generally build soil fertility. We have a soil health and composting workshop coming up on May 3rd if you want to improve your skills. https://events.humanitix.com/soil-health-and-compost-making

A much better bet than relying on synthetic fertiliser (also made from fossil fuels).

5. Self sufficiency is not the goal, community sufficiency is. If you have abundance now, share it with friends and neighbours. We're all in this together, and we have enough to get us through when we work collectively.
