A perennial favourite pukapuka to read together here at Cottle is the pūrākau of Hatu Patu and the Bird Woman. It's got all the fun stuff - a brave boy, a beautiful but scary baddie, a bit of danger, and a happy ending. This afternoon we read it five times in a row! The children like to look at a picture of the real life rock near Atiamuri where Hatu Patu is said to have hidden from the bird woman.

Lately we have been noticing tamariki engaging in real-world, purposeful play using natural resources, with strong collaboration, growing agency, and sustained, sensory-rich interactions. For example, this morning we saw creative enjoyment of our ocean of Autumn leaves and our logs- including enthusiastic construction of numerous camp fires! - and of course the classic, satisfying mixing and baking with sand and water.

We've started the week with lots of enthusiasm for "Important Jobs" outdoors, activities with satisfying sensory value. The Autumn leaves clean up crew did fabulous mahi: when the kaiako asked if they also do jobs at home, one friend commented "No I don't do jobs. I do FAVOURS". The dinosaur cleaning crew took great pleasure in coating their dinos with mud, then cleaning them up to sparkling newness. We also had tamariki rearranging the boxes and climbing equipment to make it exciting for their friends. Feeling helpful and responsible is a lovely part of being a kindy kid 😀

We are fortunate to have a large, light-filled space inside our kindergarten, which we intentionally leave uncluttered so that tamariki can make their own decisions about how they will use it throughout the day. Here are some of this morning's child-led pockets of enjoyment and learning.

Today we tried out our new hanging agility accessories that attach to the monkey bars. What a great opportunity they provide for strength and coordination skills, not to mention the need for patience and turn taking. There was added excitement when recent graduate Beauden popped in for a visit 😍

We've got some keen dancers at kindy these days. For example this morning some friends popped up from the kai table to have quick silent boogie, then returned to their seats. This afternoon we had one of our regular outdoor dance sessions courtesy of DJ Marguerite.
Joy: this is how our inner child feels about music and sunshine and friends, isn't it!
