Our kindergarten opened in 1956 so we have a long history of serving central Upper Hutt and surrounding suburbs with quality early childhood education. We want children to be engaged with learning, to follow their interests, to be stimulated and to have fun. One of our most important traditions here is for children to tell themselves at the end of each session that they “are special and clever and

great learners”. Children are practising, trying new things, gaining confidence and enjoying success. They are learning about the world around them and how to successfully work in the very important group context. Our equipment supports our curriculum focus on children’s learning through play.

Birdlife Productions visited us today for a special puppet show about Peter and his love of birds. Our tamariki were engaged in the story and enjoyed all the fun interactions throughout the show!

We also had tamariki from Maidstone Intermediate spend some time with us as part of their William Pike Project which includes completing 20+ hours of community service. Our kindy tamariki always enjoy their visits and the chance to play, chat and build relationships with our older friends. It’s been wonderful seeing the tuakana-teina relationships growing with each visit.

❄️ One of the highlights of this week has been the chilly winter weather and the snow we had! Our tamariki have been excitedly talking about the snow dusting on the Tararua peaks visible from our kindergarten and sharing stories about their winter holidays. Their interest inspired lots of snow-themed learning, including frozen small world play, building snow castles, creating snowman collages, and making beautiful snowflakes.

Yesterday our tamariki had heaps of fun playing alongside ngā tamariki from Maidstone Intermediate School as part of their Term 3 Manaakitanga and Leadership Challenge. Some of our tamariki especially enjoyed having their older siblings come to play with them! There were lots of beautiful tuakana-teina and Ako (reciprocal learning) as they played, connected and learned from one another.

Whānau Tangata (Family and Community) & Mana Tangata (Contribution) as tamariki build connections with our wider community as they play, learn and enjoy being alongside others.

Our beautiful Tōku Korowai are now proudly displayed throughout our learning environment, celebrating each child's unique identity, culture, heritage and whānau.
Our tamariki have enjoyed helping kaiako stitch their korowai together using the sewing machine. At Upper Hutt Kindergarten, we value Ngā Hononga through inclusive and reciprocal relationships and our tōku korowai strengthens the connection between home and kindergarten while celebrating every child's identity, culture and heritage. Mana Whenua (Belonging) as tamariki know they have a place where they belong and feel connected to their whānau, culture and kindergarten community. 💙

❄️ On frosty mornings and wet winter days, our tamariki continue to enjoy hands-on sensory experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and exploration.

Mana Aotūroa (Exploration) is fostered through purposeful sensory experiences as tamariki discover, investigate and make sense of the world around them.

We are so lucky to have UHub come to our kindergarten to support our whānau. When our families have questions, they are there to offer kind, practical tips, advice and ongoing support, helping them navigate whatever they may need.

Everything they provide is a free community service, which makes such a difference in ensuring all whānau can access support when they need it most. We are grateful for the mahi they do in our community.

Ngā mihi hui to Fiona and Sharon for spending time with our whānau, supporting them with any questions they may have and for spending the afternoon with us!
