A huge thank you to everyone who came down and supported the Bushijutsu fundraiser BBQ at Mitre 10. Thanks to the support of the community, we raised a total of $557.90 for the club to purchase new equipment for our growing members.
We would also like to sincerely thank Mitre 10 for allowing us the use of their community BBQ facilities and helping support local community groups.
A special thank you goes to all of the helpers who gave their time and effort throughout the day: Keith, Dallas, Karl, Phoenix, Luke, Rayce, Zion, Amira, Kaimani, Darius, Rebecca, and Jason. Your help made the day possible and is greatly appreciated.
Our next BBQ fundraiser will be held on the 26th of July at The Warehouse in the New Plymouth CBD, so come down, grab some food, and support the club.
We look forward to seeing everyone there!
ありがとうございました!

Happy Valentine’s Day 💝
Wishing everyone a happy Valentine’s Day.
In Japan, Valentine’s Day follows a different custom. It is traditionally the day when women give chocolate. Honmei-choco is given to someone special, while giri-choco is offered out of courtesy to colleagues or acquaintances. The gesture is usually quiet and understated, with more attention on intent than display.
However you observe the day, we hope it’s thoughtful and sincere.

Just a reminder classes start back in Westown this Friday, 6pm Kenjutsu, 7pm Taijutsu at Westown School

Real martial arts training isn’t about recognition.
It’s about showing up, putting in the work, and letting the lessons shape who you are when no one’s watching.
That’s the real reward.
“You train in martial arts not for trophies or titles, but for the discipline, awareness, and resilience that shape how you move through life.” - Alain Burrese

Free New Year Martial Arts Seminar — Open to the Public
We’re opening the 2026 training year with a special New Year dojo seminar, and the public is warmly invited to attend.
The day includes Oyumi Hajimesai (New Year's archery ritual). A traditional Japanese New Year ceremony of firing a whistling arrow, symbolising focus, direction, and intention, followed by hands-on training, goal setting, and a relaxed communal lunch.
In Japanese tradition, the whistle is created by a hollow bulb at the tip of the arrow, producing a sound believed to announce the shot, cut through negativity, and mark the clearing of space for the year ahead.
This event is completely free and open to anyone curious about Japanese martial arts. You’re welcome to watch, or to join in and experience training for yourself across three different arts.
What you can try:
Taijutsu — an empty-hand martial art blending the striking of Karate with the grappling and control of Aikido
Kenjutsu — classical Japanese swordsmanship
Jōjutsu — staff fighting, developing timing, distance, and coordination
No experience is required. Beginners are welcome.
If you would like to participate in training, please register beforehand:
