I was chuffed to be invited to sit in on a round table with Minister Cameron Brewer, hosted at the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce earlier this month.

Wearing my various hats across local business and industry advocacy, it was a fantastic opportunity for open dialogue - asking the important questions, exploring how government and industry can work together, and pressing for tangible commitments that deliver real outcomes for our manufacturing sector.

Alongside the round table, Minister Brewer joined us at Petronic in Wingate, to officially launch the Hutt Valley’s "Earn as You Learn" Manufacturing Apprenticeship initiative! 🛠️

Following a hugely successful pilot in the Waikato, our first regional cohort of around 20 local students is set to launch in the Hutt Valley in February 2027 🤩

The programme offers a fantastic pathway into industry:

- Open to students 16 years and older
- 2 days of classroom learning combined with 3 days of paid work experience each week
- Direct employment and pay from participating local manufacturing businesses
- Working toward a Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing
- Real-world experience across diverse manufacturing environments, paired with industry mentoring

It’s an incredibly exciting time for our Hutt Valley rangatahi - opening doors to rewarding careers that might have once felt out of reach.

A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this initiative a reality for our region! 👏

Two weeks ago, we closed our business for the day.

Not because the weather was bad (it wasn't).

Not because we were quiet (far from it).

We closed because we make a commitment to invest in something just as important as the work itself... our people. And while a couple of our team couldn't make it on the day (and they were very much missed!), the rest of us embraced the opportunity to spend some quality time together.

Last year, we flew the team to Nelson for a day of connection. It was such a powerful experience that we all agreed it couldn't be a one-off.

So this year, Wellington was our playground.

We started with morning tea at Te Papa before visiting the Gallipoli exhibition. I'd experienced it years ago, and the memories had never really left me. Walking through it again was every bit as moving as I remembered.

For many of our team, it was their first visit. We walked out quiet, reflective and emotional. Some might think that's an unusual way to begin a day of fun, but for me it was the perfect place to start. A powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, camaraderie and what it truly means to have each other's backs.

From there, the mood lifted. Lunch at Joe's Garage (with a couple of cheeky lunchtime cocktails), followed by an impromptu stop at Timezone. Watching grown adults sprint towards their favourite arcade games with the excitement of ten-year-olds was absolute gold 💯

Next stop was the Wellington Chocolate Factory for a chocolate-making masterclass. Delicious? Absolutely. Elegant? Not so much... especially once the Helga Ogden-style hairnets made an appearance! 😂

After nearly two hours of making (and enthusiastically sampling) chocolate, we headed to The Ballroom for a few highly competitive games of pool. I started quietly confident in my abilities... but as the drinks flowed, so did my talent - in the opposite direction!🍹🤣

We finished the day with my wonderful parents, John and Judy, our Managing Directors, at Mr Go's to celebrate Stratmore's 72nd birthday. What a truly special way to end a truly special day 💕

Outstandingly great food. Exceptional company. Lots of laughter. Memories we'll be talking about for years to come.

Days like this remind me that culture isn't built in staff strategy sessions or meeting rooms. It's built in our shared experiences. In laughter. In 'real' conversations, getting to know who people really are. In supporting each other. In creating memories together.

I couldn't be more proud of our team. Whether they were with us on the day or cheering on from afar, every single person plays such a massive part in making Stratmore what it is. Every opportunity we have to spend time together outside of work reinforces just how much our Stratmore whānau genuinely cares for one another.

So cheers 🥂 to 72 years of Stratmore... and to many more years of continuing to build something very special, together.

Now... the only question is... what are we doing next year? ❤️

“Pietas, Probitas et Sapientia” - Loyalty, Honesty & Wisdom.

The motto of Nelson College, where John attended boarding school as a young boy.

This week we celebrated our Craig Craig Meiklejohn and his 20 years with Stratmore and these were the simple words John spoke to Craig. And in truth, there was nothing more John needed to say. In these three values lives everything Craig represents - unwavering loyalty, humility, dedication and care - not only as an employee, but as a person and also one who has become a truly dear friend to John over the years. (You can see just how much Craig means to John - spot the pic of me consoling him, as he got overwhelmed with emotion) 💕

Craig has spent two decades giving his heart to Stratmore - quietly, selflessly and without ever seeking recognition in return. His technical knowledge and industry expertise are second to none, and it is his kindness, integrity and genuine compassion for others that truly define him.

Many throughout the years have recognised Craig’s immense value and tried to lure him elsewhere and his loyalty to Stratmore, and to the people within it, has never wavered.

Craig, thank you for your leadership, friendship, wisdom and extraordinary contribution over the last 20 years. You are deeply respected, enormously appreciated and genuinely loved.

Congratulations on a truly remarkable milestone 🥂

Any port in a storm 🌬️🌧️ ⛈️

Fortunately for our wonderful Stratmore Office Manager Fi (right of pic), there's a special and very safe port - at home with John & Judy (aka Stratmore's MDs, aka my lovely mum and dad) 💕

Like so many, Fi dutifully headed into work this morning and after I made a decision to close the business for the day, she was caught out in the storm, with road closures stopping her from getting home.

Without hesitation, mum and dad opened their home and their hearts to any and all who needed a safe haven. And from what I can gather, they're having a delightful old time together🥰

I love that in times of adversity and unpredictability, wonderful, wholesome moments occur, when we can put aside the worries for a little while and spend quality time with those who mean so much to us.

I know Fi will be worried - and I also know she'll be extremely grateful for the port in the storm.

To everyone across the Motu who is affected, we send our love and support. Take care of one another and be safe 🙏

🌟 Reflecting on 2025, I’m astounded at what we've achieved at Stratmore Stratmore Construction Solutions: Nelson branch

This was my first year in the hot seat as GM. When I took the reins I had high hopes for the year head, yet I was cautious; as I knew our industry sector wasn't in the best shape and we would inevitably hit obstacles and challenges and we'd have to dig deep. Little did I know just what lay ahead.

We kicked off focusing on building internal foundations and strong, resilient systems, processes and most importantly, a united team. We immersed ourselves in four events including the Hutt Manufacturing Expo in May, hosting our own industry event in September; welcoming our international guest speaker Juan Pablo Covarrubias and sparking conversations that will shape the future of our sector. Then the inspirational Concrete NZ Conference in October and finishing with with an unforgettable bang, being inducted into the Business Hall of Fame at the 2degrees Regional Business Awards in November 🏆

I was honoured to be elected as Board Member to the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce which has been a highlight for me personally. I joined together with the most incredible Catherine Lye at Advancing Manufacturing Aotearoa, becoming a regional lead for AMA. We commenced a wonderful new partnership with Synthesis Marketing and can't wait to show off our refined new brand offering going into 2026. And finally, a sincere and special thanks to Mark Skelly. You my friend, are simply beyond 🥰

On top of all this incredible stuff, our entire team also completed the The Lean Hub Certificate in Operational Excellence - a powerful achievement and one which has supported us to sharpen our processes, unlock new potential and create an environment where we can thrive and drive the business to continued future success. Trevor Hall, Theresa Grainger, Colin Fergus and Steffan Kelly... you guys are simply oustanding 💯 🤩

We forged new business partnerships, domestically and internationally, we celebrated milestone work anniversaries, we took our team to beautiful Nelson for a day of fun and frivolity, our sales guys refined strategies and agreed on new paths and focus areas... and we are finishing the year with a record number of pre-Christmas order fulfillments. What a bloody blast it's been!

What truly stands out for me has been watching our team flourish, together as ONE. It warms my heart beyond any event or award, and I my cup overflows with pride and gratitude, for a year that has been nothing short of remarkable!

We finished our year throwing axes (not at each other 🤣) which was just what the doctor ordered🪓😄

The future looks bright as we head into 2026 and the opportunities feel limitless✨ It's safe to say, if my team will have me, I'll be back to embrace another year at Stratmore😁

From all of us at Stratmore, thank you for being a part of our journey. We wish you a wonderful, safe, and very Meri Kirimihete 🎄

Celebrating another Milestone Stratmore🤩

On Friday, our Stratmore team proudly achieved our Advanced Certificate in Lean and Operational Excellence; marking the completion of an intensive and transformative 18-month work-based programme; delivered by the phenomenal team at The Lean Hub - Home of the Productivity Excellence Academy.

The real celebration lies in the change this journey has sparked at Stratmore.

Over the past 18 months, LEAN thinking has become woven into the fabric of who we are and how we operate - driving clearer and more engaged communication, stronger collaboration, smarter problem-solving and one of the highlights - a more energised, engaged workplace culture. We’re delivering smoother processes, better outcomes and creating an environment where innovation and accountability thrive 💯

This accomplishment is so much more than a certificate - it represents a shift in mindset and a collective commitment to continuous improvement - doing things BETTER, every single day. It strengthens our dedication to quality, efficiency and delivering exceptional experiences for our people and our customers.

We’re proud, we’re inspired and we’re just getting started💪

A huge shoutout to the extraordinary Trevor Hall (Managing Director Lean Hub), Colin Fergus (Programme Facilitator) and Theresa Grainger (GM Lean Hub). Your expertise, unwavering passion and commitment to the businesses you partner with empowers us all to continue to grow; as individuals and as businesses. We salute you 🫡👏

I count myself very fortunate when I get an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate something or someone very special - and this was one of those nights. My heart is overflowing with gratitude and love for this special man - the man I get to call 'Dad' 💙

What an absolute honour it was to take the stage in front of our Regional Business whanau and accept our induction into the Business Hall of Fame Award on your behalf.

71 years of entrepreneurial passion, energy and brilliance, culminating in this remarkable recognition. You have shown us that unwavering mahi and being honest and genuine is the key to true business success.

You are humble and kind and have created a remarkable legacy for me, Hamish Stratmore and our amazing Stratmore team to carry into the future!

We are here because of you Dad - we salute you! 👏

Warmest congratulations to our fellow inductees Woolyarns LTD and Packaging Products. Heartfelt thanks to our truly remarkable Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, to 2degrees for sponsoring these life changing awards, our category sponsors, our incredible businesses who took the plunge and entered the awards, our finalists and our incredible winners on the night and Metco Engineering for the most outstanding and beautiful trophies - what a truly special 'team' we all make! 🤩

Who said a concrete conference couldn’t be fun? 🏗️🎉 😁

My first time attending the Concrete NZ Conference was an absolute blast. The perfect mix of learning, inspiration and meeting some seriously clever (and genuinely good) people from across our industry 👍

The theme this year? Decarbonisation. Concrete might be the world’s most used material after water, but it’s also central to building a lower-carbon future here in Aotearoa.

Highlights for me included Clare Tubolets (SmartCrete CRC), driving innovation across Australia and Dr Andrew Minson (GCCA), sharing a global perspective on how our industry is tackling decarbonisation head-on.

I'm also inspired by Concrete NZ’s Roadmap to 2050 - aiming for a net-zero carbon concrete industry, including a 44% emissions cut by 2030. Ambitious? Absolutely. Achievable? With the people in our industry, I’d say yes! ✅

Beyond the sessions and insights, what really stood out was the real sense of community. Passionate, curious, forward-thinking people who also know how to have a laugh along the way. We all left feeling energised, proud and reminded that our industry isn’t just solid… it’s seriously inspiring. 💪🧱

Craig Meiklejohn and Rob Willems ... I'm excited to do it all again with you both next year in our own back yard 👊
