RUGBY LEAGUE TEAMS

Below is Southern Cross itinerary for the week.

Tomorrow can all teams going to rugby league nationals meet at the school Marae in tidy dress at 11am please.

The game time will be announced after the Powhiri.

Tokoroa High School boys football gained a scrappy, but deserved, 5-0 win over visiting Otumoetai College to keep them in the hunt for promotion. In a game that never rose to any great heights, Cleavon Nathan and top scorer Harrison Sunnex scored early before Sonñy Burnett finally scored, after numerous efforts, from outside the box with a thunderous finish following a jinking run. The second half saw Harrison complete another hat trick following his five goal haul last Saturday. Despite the comfortable score, keeper Alex Hounslow shared man of the match honours with Harrison, following several crucial saves. The boys have a break next week as they participate in their coaches major birthday milestone game, before the challenge of division one football resumes next term.

The Tokoroa Boys football team celebrated Matariki in style as Harrison Sunnex produced a five star performance by scoring an amazing five goals in a 9-2 win over Bethlehem College. Year Nine player Cleavon Nathan was rewarded for a powerful performance with a wonderful chipped goal from the sideline as well as a lovely one touch assist. Captain Sonñy Burnett provided several touches of class with his ball manipulations and intricate passing, but it was Harrison who stole the show. His one touch finishing and ability to pass the ball, low and hard into the corner of the goal was a joy to behold, much like the stars of Matariki. A time of reflection and goal setting for the boys as they press for promotion.

One of our talented ex students who has played rugby for Australia and now league for Aotearoa.

On Saturday afternoon Amy Turner will realise a dream she thought had long passed her by, making her debut for the Kiwi Ferns nearly 20 years after leaving New Zealand to start a new life in Australia.

The Tokoroa High School girls withstood a polar blast and an avalanche of attack from the visitors to gain a heroic 1-1 draw with high flying Tauhara College.

Once the girls had thawed out, the Harrison sisters combined for Jaycee to score with an ice cold finish. Captain Latia Fitpatrick was cool under pressure, while defensive partner Kaelin Savage protected her goal like a polar bear protects ones young. Kirsten Syben was superb in midfield , especially downwind in the first half when she carried the ball superbly.

The girls warmed to the task in the second half and put up an impressive blanket style defence that warmed the hearts of their frozen friends and family watching. What a cool game to watch!

The Tokoroa High School boys continued their push for promotion into division one of the Baywide Under 19 competition with a hard fought, but deserved , 3-1 away win at Te Puke High School. Following an injury and illness ravaged build up, it was Deyshawn Leaf Wicky who settled the nerves with a fantastic chipped finish after Sonñy Burnett fed a lovely ball inside the fullback to create the space. Deyshawn then provided a wicked whipped in corner that was met with a thunderous header by Riko Brass. Harrison Sunnex, who lead the front line superbly, scored his obligatory goal to secure the vital win. The boys displayed tenacity, organisation and desperation to overcome a very tricky opponent. The sign of any good team is the ability to grind out wins on days when they're not at their best.

Today our THS United went up against our predominantly senior team of THS Timberwolves. Every team has their own unique strengths with some good Netball being played.
We had Nevaeh Reid and Alexis Sarsfield United defenders against Xianthea and Jacqueline of the Timberwolves. Despite it being a friendly in-school game, there was still the hope of coming out on top. Our THS United taking the win this week.

We are the THS Niners,

Oh my gosh, it was another "one of those days" Netball game, we had a full contingent of supporters, even Miss Bella Lee who was a scorer today due to injury.
From training we practiced our game plan with our 7 players, but when you are faced with an actual opposition and girls who bring their game face, it changes everything.
Half time score was 6-4 to TKKR Kereru, this in itself tells you that the first 20 minutes was tight and evenly matched, and they were only ahead due to our own individual errors.

We had Eboni and Latoya working the centre circle, Quinna, Aorangi and Awanui on the wings, Temaire and Rutendo in the defensive circle and Shalia and Dollaina shooting.

'Oh my gosh', I was like come on girls, we were making some simple errors, and at times just giving the ball away. We are starting to gel and know everyone's style of play.

In going in to the last quarter, I still believed that our team was a strong team, and if we truly wanted to win, that we-in,(we had to put everything in as a team, by supporting, and looking after the ball, as well as finishing off every play). While I am all about fun and learning, winning to me is about putting out all you have got and walking away knowing you tried your best.
It was an intense final quarter and those 10 minutes seemed like a lifetime as it felt like we were going goal for goal, there was even a time when we couldn't decide who should have the ball as intercept after intercept held the intensity of the match. As I became more vocal of both my joy and frustration, so too did all the other supporters. I truly just wanted the bell to ring for full time.

Player of the day: Rutendo Shadaya, just her never-ending determination to try everything and being a defensive attacker, she attacks the ball all the time, adds pressure to the shooters and then chases every pass.

All the girls are amazing and as part of Matariki, each of them will be setting new goals for our next game.
