Gateway students are currently updating their CV's and preparing for an interview assessment. We have employers coming in to conduct mock job interviews - it's a little bit scary but so valuable! Thankyou to Chaya at The Warehouse for interviewing 5 students for us today. We are looking for a couple more interviewers if there is anyone in our community available to give us an hour or so of their time. Roncalli College, Timaru

Mikayla Shears completed her Gateway placement in Term 2 with The Veterinary Centre. She was able to experience first hand what it is like to be a vet nurse - observing and assisting with feeding & monitoring animals, keeping everything clean and sterile, helping prior to, during and after surgery, learning how to give medication, xrays & ultra sounds etc.
Mikayla has completed animal care assessments on feeding and health of cats and dogs and gained credits that will count towards a future vet nursing qualification.
Mahi pai Mikayla and thankyou Veterinary Centre Timaru by the Big Blue Cross what an awesome experience to help Mikayla confirm her career direction and to make a start on her qualification.

Congratulations Daniel van der Spuy

Daniel is leaving school today to start an electrical apprenticeship with Plunket Electrical. He has been on work experience with Plunket Electrical for most of the year while completing the EarnLearn Electrical Programme. He has completed theory work in class at school while gaining practical experience in the workplace.

The programme has 20 credits that can count towards an apprenticeship. He has made a good start with gaining basic skills using tools and equipment, installing lights, heat pumps, running wires under the floor & in ceilings, fitting lights and switches, lots of wire stripping & twisting and helping with a wide range of rural and domestic jobs.

Well done Daniel, you have made a great start to your electrical career.

Congratulations Jacob Barron.

Jacob has completed his Gateway Programme and is heading off to start a full time job on a dairy farm. He came into the programme knowing that his future pathway would be farming. He started out with Dallas at Gordon's Valley Station where he helped with stock work - moving, drafting, dagging, crutching & drenching sheep, moving cattle, fencing, driving quad bikes and going out to the Temuka stock sale.

He moved into a dairy farming placement with Matt Goodwin near Temuka and has been helping with preparation for calving, moving fences etc. He has completed Primary ITO assessments through Gateway and will continue with his PITO qualifications in the workplace.

Thank you to Dallas and Matt for your support of our Gateway Programme. We look forward to hearing how Jacob's farming career progresses.

Arianna Labuschagne has been completing her Gateway placement at Busy Bees Timaru, where she has been gaining valuable experience in an early childhood education environment.

Throughout her placement, Arianna has been working alongside the teaching team and learning about the important role early childhood educators play in supporting children's learning, development, and wellbeing. She has enjoyed interacting with the children and observing how learning opportunities are created through play and everyday experiences.

Arianna is completing unit standards through Vision College. These studies are helping her build a strong foundation of knowledge to complement the practical skills she is developing in the workplace.

Thank you Busy Bees Childcare for supporting our Gateway programme and providing Arianna with this fantastic opportunity.
Mahi pai Arianna!

GFF is about more than farming.
It's about:
✔️ Building confidence
✔️ Learning practical life skills
✔️ Becoming part of a community
✔️ Having mentors who want to see you succeed
✔️ Creating a career with real opportunities
The stock work, fencing and machinery are important, but the biggest growth happens in the people.
Could this be your next step?

Ashleigh Blogg has her placement at Silver Birches Dental. She is getting some real hands on experience helping the dental assistants. Things like handing instruments to the hygienist, suctioning, Xrays, using the UV curing light and preparing the room between patients. She is learning about different types of fillings and tools that are used.

Ashleigh would love to work as a dental assistant when she leaves school and has started her qualification through Careerforce. She is working on a 23 credit dental assistant programme and is well on track to gain this mini qualification through Gateway.

Thank you Silver Birches and well done Ashleigh - great feedback on your progress.

Noah McErlain came into Gateway with a few career ideas to explore, one of them was arborist. The Primary ITO Training Advisor put us in touch with CORDE - Noah trialed a taster day with them and was hooked.

He signed up for his placement and spent most of the school holidays working with the team before leaving school to work for CORDE full time. He has started his NZ Apprenticeship in Arboriculture with Primary ITO and is thriving on the hands on, outdoors work. His favourite part of the job is climbing trees and felling them - a dream job for a keen adventurous, outdoors man.

Xanthe Cooney has her placement at Sacred Heart Primary. Every Wednesday she helps out in the classroom with maths, literacy and anything else they are doing on the day. Her interest has been in teaching right from the start, it was a matter of whether it would be early childhood or primary. Work experience is really helpful for decisions like this and a great way to strengthen applications to study.

In her Gateway class, Xanthe has completed an ECE assessment about health & well being of young children and her next one is about support strategies to assist a student with autism.

Mahi pai Xanthe! and thankyou Room 13 for the wonderful photo. Sacred Heart School Timaru Roncalli College, Timaru

Coming into Gateway at the start of the year Annie Sargent had a very clear career goal to become an electrician. She has her placement with Graham Taylor Electrical and is completing the EarnLearn Electrical Programme. She has practical tasks to be signed off at work experience and theory work to do in her Gateway class at school.

Annie has been helping with running wires in new homes, installing sockets & switches, measuring up and installing down lights, installing heat pumps, she is really hands and loving it.

She is definitely keen to get started with an electrical career - the 20 credits gained through the programme will count towards a future apprenticeship.

It was very cool to see Annie working under the guidance of Jonny Rush when I visited last week. Jonny is a past Roncalli Gateway student.

Thank you Jamie and the team at Graham Taylor Electrical and well done Annie, you will be an awesome electrician!
