After leaving the flax mill we stopped at the playground for a lunch break. Then we had a wonderful visit to Te Hikoi Museum in Riverton, where they learned about the rich history of Aparima and the local area. We would like to sincerely thank Mrs Fleck and Mrs Boniface for taking the time to show us around and share their knowledge and stories. Their passion and expertise helped bring the history of Aparima to life for our students. It was an engaging and memorable learning experience for everyone involved. We were unable to take photos in the museum, you should go visit to see the contents. We are fortunate to live in such a history rich space of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Today we added some more knowledge into our ketes around natural resources found in Southland. Our challenges for today were to be curious and present, which meant we weren't trying to rush from one thing to another. Our first stop was the Templeton Flax Mill near Riverton. This is the last working flax mill in New Zealand, in the past there used to be 83 Flax Mills. Everyone, including the adults were fascinated by the processes used to turn Flax into a much sort after product. The machinery and equipment used for this process was created in the 1800s. This alone is outstanding, still fully operational today, and not a piece of modern day technology used. The labour intense production, and the lower price been offered for the final product saw the disestablishment of the Flax mills throughout the country. We are very fortunate the Templeton Flax Mill Heritage Trust saw how valuable restoring the Mill was so people, just like us now and in the future can visit and appreciate the Mill. A great example of natural resources in Southland that are still being used today. Think Peter Jackson's movie props to KiwiFibre who turn plants into cars, snowboards and other interesting products.

Today's 2026 Basin Cross Country was a huge success. The students from Mararoa School and Te Anau School run, skipped and walked their wee hearts out, tino pai, great job tamariki. A big thank you to our Mararoa School Community. Once again, outdoing yourselves. For a small crew, you can certainly turn on a great day. The ever popular sausages and baking are a continued winner of the day. A big thank you to Tarn and Murray Willans for allowing us to use your property for the event, and Beverlee and Haydn for helping the Willan's set up the course and ensuring everyone gets to the finish line after running the correct course. Congratulations to those students going on to represent the Basin at Northern Cross Country on Wednesday 3rd June. The running conditions were good today, starting with a bit of fog and then ending with a bit of sunshine, next year we will put an order in for more sun, less fog.

We had a great time today at The Rakatu Wetlands with Clair and Roger. We learned lots of new facts about the wetlands on a Scavenger Hunt, got up and close with some trout and tuna (eels) and finished the day with some flax planting. We will learn some more about what we can do to protect the Wetlands as part of our inquiry. Today we were living our Caring for the Environment School Value.

Reminder to our Mararoa School families. We are off to Rakatu Wetlands tomorrow. Please wear appropriate covered in footwear, warm jacket (and possibly a beanie & sunhat), pack enough food to last the day and a filled water bottle. Buses run as normal. See you in the morning.

Happy Support Staff Week to three amazing ladies! We all know Angie Mark Campbell is the absolute wheelhouse of Mararoa School, she is a master of so many different things and keeps everything afloat. She keeps us steering in the right direction in her calm, unflappable way. Mrs Gilchrist, in her kind and gentle way, helps students (and teachers) become the best learners they can be (and is known to enjoy learning the ukelele herself). Jampee keeps our school s**c and span, which we are thankful for. We so appreciate you all, thank you for all you do!
