We have had lots of fun celebrating Easter over the past few weeks. The tamariki enjoyed decorating the centre with Easter related crafts, including painted bunnies, eggs and carrots. To conclude our celebrations, last Thursday we had our annual Easter egg hunt!

Last week we celebrated Waitangi Day by learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and what it represents for the people of Aotearoa.

Through meaningful discussions and hands-on activities, the tamariki learned about Māori taonga (treasures), including culture, language and resources.

One of our lovely kaiako bought in her collection of pounamu for the children to look at, before they got busy sculpting their very own out of clay. The children enjoyed hearing about the significance of each pounamu, as well as learning about the tikanga around pounamu.

The tamariki also learned about the importance of wharenui in te ao Māori (the Māori world) and how they are used as a place for gathering. They made a wharenui out of popsicle sticks, then drew their whānau portrait to put in it. This was a great way for them to make connections between people, places and things in their world.

What a wonderful evening we had at our Christmas Party! The children had a blast on the bouncy castles, and were very lucky to have a visit from Santa 🎅🏼 It was nice to come together with everyone and celebrate an amazing year!

On Friday, we were lucky to have a truck from our local fire brigade visit us! The children enjoyed exploring it up close, learning about the different tools and getting sprinkled by the hose! They also got to sit in the fire truck, with some even brave enough to turn the siren on 🚨 As we looked around, the firefighters explained how they help keep our community safe and showed us their special protective gear.

This visit helped the tamariki strengthen their sense of belonging and connection within our community, broadening their understanding of the wider world 🌎

A huge thank you to our whānau with connections to Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade for organising this. We are very grateful! You definitely made our day 🚒

Today we wore our gumboots to help raise awareness and funds for rangatahi (youth) mental health in Aotearoa. The idea is simple… Life can feel a bit like walking through mud sometimes, so we put our gumboots on to show our support for those who are struggling 💙

Every dollar raised goes directly toward funding counselling sessions for rangatahi across New Zealand. If you’d like to donate or learn more, visit gumbootfriday.org.nz

Diwali, also known as The Festival of Lights, is a special celebration for many people around the world. It’s a time to come together and celebrate light, hope, kindness and new beginnings.

Over the past week, we have enjoyed learning about the special traditions of Diwali and have been busy decorating rangoli patterns, drawing mehndi patterns, creating lanterns, and even each made our very own diya lamp out of salt dough 🪔

To conclude our celebrations, on Friday we had a fun-filled dress up day! It was awesome to see everyone dressed in their bright colours. The children also enjoyed trying on some traditional clothing that one of our kaiako bought in!

A few weeks ago, the children planted sunflower seeds! They have enjoyed caring for them and watching closely as they sprouted and started to grow into strong seedlings - checking on them each day, watering them and talking about what plants need to grow.

Now our sunflower seedlings are ready for their next adventure… To be planted in the children’s gardens at home! We look forward to hearing all about how tall they grow 🌻

Kia Ora! Last week we celebrated Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). We have enjoyed learning new te reo Māori words and phrases through various activities, including arts and crafts, puzzles, and waiata (songs). The children were also introduced to rakau sticks, which were a wonderful way to celebrate te reo Māori through music and movement.

It’s been so special to hear te reo Māori filling our learning space, and to see the tamariki embrace the language with such enthusiasm. Ake ake ake - A Forever Language.

Last week we celebrated Onam! Onam is a festival from Kerala, India, that represents the values of gratitude, unity and joy. The children enjoyed learning about the special traditions of Onam through various activities, including creating flower rangoli patterns, tug of war and taste testing some yummy mango-coconut payasam for morning tea on Friday. It was a great opportunity for the children to experience and appreciate a celebration from another culture 🌸

Yesterday the children celebrated the special Dads, Grandfathers and father figures in their lives. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou for the love, guidance and care you provide each and every day.
