GUARDIANS
Natural World and the Environment – New Programme

Take an indepth look through the magnifying glass to investigate the very big and the very small! Let’s dive into what an invertebrate and vertebrates are and compare sizing!

This programme is in collaboration with Te Papa Tongarewa’s touring exhibition – Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri! Colossal Squid: Freaky Features!
Students gain and introduction to the wonderful world of a big sea creature and small bugs. Using a number of engaging visuals that lead to discover the following questions –
What are the similarities?
What are the differences?
Where do they live in the environment?
What evolutional changes have they conquered to suit their habitat today?
Which are found in Aotearoa, New Zealand?
Which are not found in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and why?
What can you do to protect these living creatures and be guardians of Te Taiao – The Environment?

Word from education: School Camps

For many ākonga students, School Camp is the highlight of the year. In recent years, events like covid unfortunately put a hold on these events. Camps were often re-imagined to fit current limitations, with many schools opting for an experience closer to home, like based at the school itself.
However now we are seeing camps going ahead in a multitude of ways, and our ELC education programmes are a great school camp outing or activity.

Recently we have hosted school camp groups, with programmes that connect and reinforce the learning, enriching the experience. They can be a lot of fun too. We have held sessions out at sites and parks, and also here at the Education and Research Centre. We can even join the students at their venue too!

Our education programmes are multi-curriculum and can be a great hands on extension to the school camp activity/experience!

Word from education: Create!

Here at the Te Awamutu Museum Education and Research Centre our Education programmes for ECE, Home School groups, Schools and kura are multi curriculum. We weave a range of subjects together to enrich the school’s local curriculum.

For example, ākonga students were able to explore themes within the guardians of the natural world with the wearable arts programme. The images only share some of the creative play ākonga students experienced as when weaving, shaping, cutting, moulding, and fanning paper bags, cardboard and newspapers!

Utilising two programmes inspires ākonga students connect to overall themes of waste minimisation, how to value natural resources and think about why preservation of those resources are essential.

Word from education: Zoom!
When ākonga students can’t come to us, we could create a virtual programme!

Programmes can be offered remotely or tailored to be delivered via zoom. We zoom into one device in the classroom, with that casting to a projector or large screen.

This includes a facilitated presentation full of images and video. Plus, to ensure the session interactive and engaging ākonga students abecome active participants using Poll Everywhere! Similar to the Kahoot Quiz App, students use their individual devices to log into Poll Everywhere with our unique link. They answer the questions, or even ask their own and we can respond to their feedback instantly!

Word from education: Explore
Kahikatea dominant swamp forests are said to have been wide spread through the Waikato basin.

With only 120 ha of this vegetation type remaining in Waipā, the significance of the 14 ha Kahikatea stand, Yarndley's bush is high.
New Zealand’s tallest native tree, it can live to be more than 500 years old, and while none of the tree’s trees at Yarndley's have reached that age yet, it still is a great place to explore.

Te Awamutu Museum Education love joining school groups for sessions out at natural sites like Yarndley's bush, having recently hosted a local school here.
The walk down the hill to the walk itself gave those more exuberant ākonga time to stretch their legs and let off some energy. The bush walk is a relaxed short loop on the boardwalk, which gives plenty of time to stop, look, listen and just be. The viewing platform provided an excellent spot to look at some objects and for tamariki to use porotitti, (A small hand-held musical instrument) in the realm of Tane-mahuta.

The centre chooses the topic, we create a flexible programme, and either host the group at the Te Awamutu Museum Education and Research Centre, or join them at their place. It’s that easy, and a tonne of educational fun.

Get your bookings in for Term4 and for 2024, don't miss out on amazing and exciting programmes.

Whether it’s a focus on insects, like our fabulous friends in the montage, looking at tuna, manu, even fossils and dinosaurs. Or you may be looking at something completely new, we would still love to hear from you to see what we can do.

Word from Education: Explore
Our education programmes for Early Childhood groups, Home School’s, Kura Kaupapa, primary, intermediate and secondary schools allow ākonga to explore history and so much more.

The new insect collection allows ākonga to handle and magnifying the world of beetles and bugs. Our first experience with this fantastic resource was a huge hit. A big thanks to the tremendous local early childhood centre we visited recently with this brand-new experience.

We are proud to team with Te Awamutu library, with items from our education collection on display. Incredible mahi by the library team and our incredible collections team.

Have you visited our ANZAC Day display at Te Awamutu Library? The display is a collaboration between our Library and Te Awamutu Museum and features items from the Museum Education handling collection, photos from Museum archives and books from our Library collection.
