Yesterday our hardy adventurers proved there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing! We rugged up with all our wet weather gear and braved the rain and water logged ground at Ivon Wilson park…much to their delight.
They started off pretty dry but that changed very quickly when the temptation of jumping/sitting/sliding into puddles proved too much…they couldn’t resist!
Meanwhile back at Stars, puddles provided an excellent play activity when paired with their home made “spin bike”!!!
What a day…

Our Matariki whānau celebration was held at Stars last night amid the lights … with pumpkin and vegetable soup alongside Elsa's sourdough, and of course toasted marshmallows!
The team were keen to “sing” first with their hearty (at times!) rendition of 'Hey Matariki', a waiata firmly ensconced in all the Stars tamariki repertoire!
Thanks to all that braved the cold to join us. A special occasion for our tamariki!
Mānawatia a Matariki - Happy Matariki!

We are very lucky to have 2 regular visitors to Stars. Almost every week Michelle from the Community Gardens visits us to help the tamariki with our front garden…planting veges, harvesting veges, weeding, looking after the worm farm, and generally instilling in our tamariki a real passion for gardening! Thanks Michelle for being such an inspiration for our Stars whanau!

Our other special visitor is Mrs Library (aka Mel), who brings some really cool books and waiata to share with us. As soon as the tamariki see her walking towards the building the cry goes up “Mrs Library is here!”. She always has a rapt audience, tamariki and Kaiako alike! Thanks Mel for sharing your passion of reading and all things books!

Awesome turnout this morning for the ANZAC parade. The weather was balmy and it was great to see so many Southern Stars (past and present) tamariki and their whanau! Maddie did a sterling job of laying the Stars wreath! Thanks Maddie!
And big thanks to the Kaiako and tamariki who made the wreath.

Movement is at the very core of how children develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. Having access to equipment and big open areas so there is room to move is so important, and we are very lucky that we have a big outdoor area at Southern Stars for the running, biking, climbing, swinging, lifting, and hauling that is needed to develop big arm/leg/core muscles and gross motor skills in young children. The younger tamariki watch and learn from our more competent gymnasts/bikers and this gives them a challenge to aspire to. The older tamariki are always finding different ways to use the equipment, setting themselves extra challenges...
